So I should setup strings to be parallel and check toe front and rear to see where I'm at?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It started by just feeling a little oversteer in a hard turn under power. Now I'm feeling all squirly on the highway in straight line. It will pull to the right and then pull to the left. It feels like something dynamic is happening to the rear suspension. Straight line it will dive left or right and after it sets in a turn it feels normal but as you turn I feel the back end move outward. I had the car aligned, replaced inner and outer steering links, put new tires on and checked all the bushings and suspension while it was on the lift. Everything looks normal but its still there and getting scary to drive. It's got 72,000miles, no modifications, and has always been stored indoors. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Something is broke in the rear suspension links. specifically parts that control toe.

POST 3Original post

Have to agree with Joe ^^^ Jack up the rear and remove the wheels so you can do a very careful inspection of all the suspension linkage. If you do not have the means or know how to do this, get it to an indy who knows your car or get it to a Porsche dealer. I would limit your driving anymore until you get it figured out. Sounds like something is majorly wrong/broken.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was up under there myself with a pry bar and didn't find a single thing loose. I'll get back under and pay special attention to rear toe. I think that makes sense with what I'm feeling.

POST 5Original post

I had the same thing just happen on the track. On the front straight of Auto Club Speedway at 130 - it feels like the car is being steered by the rear end....back and forth. Pretty unsettling.... Toe at the rear passenger appeared to be off (we had to check with string). We adjusted best we could in the pits and it helped, but didn't eliminate the problem (at very high speed). Lower speeds and turns were not an issue. Drove home on the highway and didn't really notice (crappy CA highways). We're working on alignment now. Good luck.

POST 6Original post

Having the rear not track properly due to suspension is a frightening feeling - especially in a RWD car with the sensation of the rear end trying to overtake the front. An alignment will at least tell you what's out of spec and will hopefully point to a broken/worn component...

POST 8Original post

Make sure that either of your rear shocks aren't blown too. If everything else looks tight and checks out, I would check the rear shocks, especially since you said they were original(no modification at least).

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll check toe, shocks, and engine mounts (not sure how that could change suspension)

POST 10Original post

Like Johneechat said string it. any piece of fishing line, sewing thread etc. and a ruler is all you need. it will be easy to detect.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I should setup strings to be parallel and check toe front and rear to see where I'm at? I'm assuming that they should both have some slight toe in for stability.

POST 12Original post

yep, like total 1/16" or 1/32 each side. Toe in

POST 13Original post

check out this alignment calculator for using strings. https://robrobinette.com/DIYAlignmentCalculator.htm It states that the strings need to be parallel, but do not need to be perfectly parallel with the vehicle. That's the magic of trigonometry in the calculations.

POST 14Original post

Saw same symptoms on my track car. Found one of the toe links weren't torqued down properly.

POST 15Original post

Had this happen to me at 140mph at COTA first time I raced there. Not a pleasant feeling. COTA Qualifying Run - Loose Ball Joint - YouTube Check the flange nut on the rear lower control arm for tightness. Also, as has already been suggested, check the toe links at the rear.
