Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have lost the key to my 2002 996 C4S, Porsche want over $ 400- plus taking the car to them, anyone know of a locksmith in Los Angeles equipped for this task/Many thanks,

POST 3Original post

The keys need to be programmed to the car. You’ll need to spend the $400.

I know, programing is another $ 150-!!!! plus I have to have it towed there....

POST 5Original post

Bought my 997 with only one key.....live in terror, anybody found a work around?

Yup, time to bite your lip and go to the dealer, and spend money. Only a PIWIS system can code the car to accept a new key.

Can you get a used key from a wrecking yard for cheap and have a dealer re-program that used key for $150?

POST 8Original post

No. A new key comes with a little white tag that has the critical coding information that needs to be entered into the PIWIS to get the car to accept the key. Without that tag, the key is a paperweight. And the car is coded to accept the key, not the other way around.

POST 9Original post

So true. The dealer is the only deal. I bought a Boxster 2010 with only one key and am due at the Scottsdale dealer as they have the key blank, the key fob w/ brain, and the brains to program the damned thing. If one travels in the wrong car and leaves the Porsche key "safely" in the resort hotel room while headed to and in-house dinner, prepare for major stranded disappointment if housekeeping is in the hall at diner time - and the myriad of scenarios for MIA one's only key are too numerous to list. I think I am at under 600 bucks for the whole enchilada even with the selling dealer buying the parts at "wholesale" and the programing Porsche dealer at 2x retail for 15 minutes of effort in front of a laptop.. .

POST 10Original post

A couple years ago, I got a replacement key from Porsche of Marin for about $160 shipped, and a local Indy programmed it to my car for $125.

POST 12Original post

Just got quoted $400 for new Key including transponder programming from an independent shop.

POST 13Original post

Lost key. Brought the only one key left and the car to the dealer. $500 later I got the car back and the new key worked .... but the old key what was working when the car is brought in is no longer working. The ashole dealer refused to accept responsibility that he broke the old key. I had to buy another key fob, programmed to work, and re-used the old blade, for $300. So $800 later, I have two keys. Fast forward 6 months, I found the key that I thought my wife has lost, inside my old jacket pocket. Now, we lost another key. Down to one working key and don't know if I want to pay $800 for two new keys, again.

POST 14Original post

My spare key locks/unlocks but won't start the car. Parts guy told me that service could just re-program it for a little labor. Made the appointment and they wouldn't even reprogram my spare key without some secret code?? that came with the car. Dumb. For $400 I'll risk it.
