Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi. Just seeking some feedback on my 2001 996 turbo with 60,000 miles. The dented and leaking headers were swapped for OEM manifolds but the noise persists. It goes away as the engine warms up. https://youtube.com/shorts/_OQzzUJ9vi4?feature=share With a plastic hose it appears to be coming from the under the heat shield near the top of the hot side. POST 2Original post

It could be normal Mezger engine noise. Take a trip down this rabbit hole. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum/980176-mezger-engine-noise.html

POST 3Original post

People seem to forget that the almighty Mezger engine was designed to go racing with, so no consideration was given to making it "soccer mom" quiet..............

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have 2 996 turbos. The both turbos on the 02 are quieter and the right turbo is also quiet. Plus it gets quieter as the engine warms up. All 4 nuts connecting the muffler are tight and I’m sure I replaced the o ring gasket. The headers where badly dented and cracked. I hoped that was the source but after replacing the manifolds the noise is still there. Oh well. Thanks to Covid and work from home I’ll have time to drop the motor for a more thorough inspection. POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Turns out the noise was from the wastegate. The PO tightened the actuator rod too much. Thus i guess the gate couldn’t close properly. Loosened the rod a bit and all is well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
