Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I've started the winter work beginning with the interior including the seats, rollcage and harnesses. I need some help from anyone thats installed a short hub/quick release steering wheel combo in a 996. Issue #1: I ordered my favorite gear too quick and would prefer to use it. I picked up my favorite Momo wheel (350mm Corse) and an NRG quick release only to find that the NRG 997/Audi/VW short hub will not work on the 996. Issue #2: I can't find anything. I've used Spraco, Momo, OMP and NRG quick release setups in the past but am having trouble finding anything for the 996. I've seen Momo hubs and they will stick out too far. The Rennline setup states its the same length. Issue #3: The airbag/horn wires. What do you do with them? I've installed a few of these setups on other vehicles and never seen anything like this. There's about 5 feet of wire wrapped inside the steering column for these wires behind the wheel around the rack. I don't see any disconnects either. The steering rack spindle is also a different diameter than other Porsches. If you've installed one of these, what did you do with the wires and what hub/QR combo did you go with? Rennline? Work? Cheers in advance

POST 2Original post

FWIW on your issue #3...the "5 feet of wire wrapped inside the steering column" is called a "Clockspring". Try a search for that term, you'll get lots of info. Sorry, can't help with the rest.

That's actually really helpful. Looks like I just need to take apart the steering column plastics and remove the clockspring entirely as there is no need for a horn or airbag. Then get the computer reset so the lights go off. Any one got any ideas on the hub or QR? I ordered the Rennline 996 Hub in hopes it will connect to the NRG quick release and NOT stick out too far. Its the only one I can find beyond the ridiculously priced $350 Works Bell 996 version.
