I Installed a 997ssk from Suncoast, I think it was $425.00, after about two years of owning my 996.

I installed these bushings in a used 997 shifter console for someone and it feels just like my 997 GT3 shifter console.

I bought the 997 shifter used for $135 on eBay and the bushings are $70.

The Numeric is probably the best overall, but expensive...for a reason.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Lots of slop in my 03 4s shifts and its time to upgrade. Car will see spirited street driving only, 10k miles/yr, no track appearances. 997 upgrade sufficient? or is the SSK (2x the price I see so far) really worth the extra $. GT3 console upgrade appears slightly less expensive than the SSK. Very confused. Advice please. Much appreciated
I've read a lot about the options. Seems the 997 version improves things nicely without creating the increased possibility of a "money" downshift.
I can't put one in my car now...
I upgraded to the 997 and the improvement is real in reduced shifter throw but I would not say it is more precise. I plan to install the Function First upgrade to the 997 shifter in hopes of more precision.
The GT3 shifter is not that much more expensive and seems to get good reviews. Mine is worn and I have trouble downshifting. I don't want to make a mistake.
I have a 997.2 GT3 console in mine and I was debating swapping over to the SSK. However, after the recent price increase on it I just can't justify it over a Numeric. So now I debating whether to do that along with the cables or not.
My car came with the 997 SSK and I like it quite a bit. The shift action feels very precise, albeit s bit notchy. Overall feel is solid. I need to change my transmission fluid so I think that will only improve things. Ideally it would be nice to find someone with it installed so you can try it out. To me. touch points are pretty important and would rate them as 1) shifter 2) steering wheel 3) pedals.
Originally had a Schnell kit, was good for a while until it popped out of the plastic piece that holds the ball end. Now it sits on a shelf.
Replaced that with 997 and like it just as much. Way better than the stock, especially for casual driving. Some of you do track days, which I'd go with a Numeric at that point.
I went with a 997 shifter with Phenix Engineering bushings. A noticeable difference. Basically makes it a 997 GT3 shifter. I bought the 997 shifter used for $135 on eBay and the bushings are $70.

I went from 996 to 997 to 997 SSK and they all offer a marginal improvement over each other. Happy with the 997 SSK but you will still have some notchiness until fully warmed up. Once it's warmed up it's butter though.
I have the 997 GT3 shifter.
I really like it.
I have a spare in case I buy another 996 or a 986.
I also don't want a SSK so I hopefully won't money shift.
The Numeric is probably the best overall, but expensive...for a reason.
I Installed a 997ssk from Suncoast, I think it was $425.00, after about two years of owning my 996.
Two years after that, sold the 997ssk and bought the Numeric Shifter with Numeric cables, about $1100.00
The improvement of the 997ssk over stock 996 shifter was pretty good.
The improvement of the Numeric over the 997ssk, night and day.
Very much appreciate all the feedback. Numeric was previously described to me as being crisp like a fine bolt action rifle, which sounds like what you would seek to attain. Are the Numeric throws similar to stock in length or more like a SSK? Thanks
The total amount of throw is adjustable.
The shifter has a three position choice, I tried the shortest when I first got it, but have since adjusted to middle position.
The shortest throw adjustment is similar to the old Hurst Super Shifter back in the muscle car era.
I swapped out original 996 ssk for 997 GT3 shifter on my wife's C4S last year and it's much better. I think I'm gonna try Numeric on my 99 C2 DE car this next year. If I don't like it I can easily sell it and go back to 997 GT3 version.
Is this the 997 GT3 shifter upgrade that people are using and like? I see this and I see what maybe is a 997 gen 1 GT3 shifter with a different part number, significantly lower price, but I think plastic internals vs metal.

Thanks
I think equally at home on street and track but visually a big departure from stock, check out CAE for your DE car.
Mine is among my favorite, of many mods.

Yes, metal on the ends (not all of the moving parts are metal like the Numeric or the Function First Shift Right)
I got mine here:

Any of the 997 shifter consoles are an improvement.
The GT3 shifters with the metal bushings are the „best.“
But you can change a „regular“ 997 shifter console into pretty much a 997 GT3 console by installing these for just $70:

I installed these bushings in a used 997 shifter console for someone and it feels just like my 997 GT3 shifter console.
The sku of my GT3 shifter from Suncoast was 997GT3CONSOLE
I'll check out that CAE shifter vs the Numeric when the time comes. Thanks for the recommendation.
Ive driven manual transmissions all my life and I cant think of any time I grabbed 2nd when I wanted 4th. Or 1st when I wanted 5th.
Is the money shift problem something that happens more often with modified shifters? Do the factory setups Ive been driving protect me from my own clumsy shifting?
It normally happens at the track when you've got a lot of stuff going on coming into a corner. Your trying to shift quickly plus you're usually rev matching so there's not the resistance to putting it in 2nd vs 4th like there might be on the street.
BMW E36 M3 (1995-1999) were somewhat famous for it. As the shifter got sloppy, it was somewhat easy to mean to shift from 3rd to 4th and accidently shift to 2nd. That is a forced overrev - which no rev limiter can stop. Same basic pattern as the 996 shifter. As mentioned - often happens on track, but certainly happens on the street as well. On the M3, the issue was exasperated by old soft engine and transmission mounts. The tail of the shifter carrier was body mounted, the head was transmission mounted. So the shifter carrier would move due to the movement of the engine/transmission under load.
We should set up a Numeric shifter group buy.. if Numeric is willing to sponsor it. Helps bring down the cost a bit and gets a whole bunch of enthusiasts on board at once. I once bought an exhaust for my old GTI this way. They set the goal at like 20 units or something, Once 20 sign up and pay, the units get shipped out.
right now the bundle is on sale for $1164. Group buys for enthusiast typically offer super steep discount in exchange for the big one time sale. How about $550 for 20 units? Plus all the free marketing that comes with a huge forum bumping it for ages to come.
