I suspect that when the car was repaired, the antenna booster in the passenger A pillar wasn't connected correctly, or was damaged and not replaced.

The radio I replaced also had the same problem with radio reception, plus the CD player in the Becker head would skip, and the external 6-CD player was buggered up and wouldn't release the CD cartridge.

Would I be better off just going with a fender-mount antenna and bypassing the Porsche over-engineered 3-antenna system, or by replacing the antenna booster?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, New member here, and pretty new owner of a 2002 911 Carrera Coupe, my first Porsche. I just swapped out my OEM Becker radio (CDR 220) for a new Pioneer head unit. The new head unit works well for playing CDs and tunes on a USB thumb drive, but FM reception is so-so and AM reception is almost non-existent. The radio I replaced also had the same problem with radio reception, plus the CD player in the Becker head would skip, and the external 6-CD player was buggered up and wouldn't release the CD cartridge. The previous owner hit a deer with the car, although you can't tell by looking that any damage was done. I suspect that when the car was repaired, the antenna booster in the passenger A pillar wasn't connected correctly, or was damaged and not replaced. Would I be better off just going with a fender-mount antenna and bypassing the Porsche over-engineered 3-antenna system, or by replacing the antenna booster? Mark44

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

39 people looked at my post, but no one offered an opinion. So here's my plan going forward. I'm going to buy the cheapest car antenna I can find, and plug it into the radio, and see of that makes a difference. I'm also going to spring for a trim strip removal tool, and take off the trim to get at the antenna booster, and make sure that none of the windings in the booster are shorted out, and that the connectors are actually connected to the car's antenna connections. If the booster seems to check out, then I will think about whether I want to drill a hole in the fender and opt for an external antenna.
