Reported cause
It turned out that the key was fine, even though it had gotten damp with salt water.
Leading evidence: 'key was fine, even though it had gotten damp' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'key was fine, even though it had gotten damp' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check battery in the keyand the voltage is fine' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My key didn't work when I got out of the car to go into the movie theater this weekend.
The transmitter on one of my keys stopped working last night. I'm not really sure why. The LED still lights up when i press the 3 buttons, but no there is no response from the car. I checked the battery in the keyand the voltage is fine. There isn't any visible damage to the circuit board, although there almost never is on electrical components. My other key works fine, so i'm using that one for now.I guess i'll call my dealer tomorrow...
Has the key been dropped or in moisture? If not my bet is the battery even if the voltage still shows good. If you take the key apart you can see how easy it would be to damage it. Please let us know.
My key didn't work when I got out of the car to go into the movie theater this weekend. I tried to lock the car and nothing. TheKey FOB lit up but it would lock the car, open thehood, or the back hatch. Iused the key to manually open the door, and re-shut the door. Itfinally locked.
When I came out of the Theater, it wouldn't open. I manually opened the car door, shut it again...... then locked and unlocked the door via the fob fine.
I haven't had a problem since. Itmade me worry though.

My other key works fine, so i'm using that one for now. I swapped the battery between my good key and bad key and the bad key still doesn't work, so i'm guessing i need a new key.
I was down at Huntington Beach watching the fire works the night before it stopped working. It was definetely humid at the beach, butthe keywas in my pocket the whole time, so i'd be suprised if that was all it took to kill my key.
Now that i think about it i was at Laguna Beach a few days before walking on the sand at the waters edge. Again i didn't get wet, but perhaps there were a few drops of wateri just didn't realise it at the time.
Attila, ifhumidity caused problems with our keys mine would never work where I live. Even if you dropped the key in freshwater, opening the case and blow drying it would probably solve that problem. Sounds like a defective key, to me.
I agree. I have an appointment at the dealer to get my key replaced. They said that they have to reprogram all keys at once.

Attila,
I recently was taking what I thought was going to be strictlya walk on the beach with my 3.5 year old when there were some good waves and rip currents. I had my key, cell phone and wallet in my cargo shorts. Unexpectedly, of course I should have been better prepared for this, I was in the surf keeping my son from getting swept away. After the immediate concern for my son's well being passed I started wondering about the condition of my cell phone, key and wallet. As I made my way back to the car, I noticed my cell phone was dead and worried that it would be really bad if I couldn't start the car. It turned out that the key was fine, even though it had gotten damp with salt water. After detaching the battery from the cell phone and cleaning the contacts, and then letting everything dry out over night the cell phone came back to life as well. I now leave all of the electronic things in a bag where they will stay dry but could be stolen while I am playing in the surf with the little guy. It definitely has become more complicated to go to the beach and actually go into the water these days.
mpollard,
Sporting goods and boating stores carryhard shelled casesand flexible vinyl bags designed to keep things dry. For example, I have a flat, vinyl zip lockcontainer that would hold a key or wallet contents (not big enough for entire wallet). It's flexible and fits in a pocket easily. I use it when kayaking to keep my ID and $$ dry. Perhaps something like that wouldbe better than leaving your car key on the beach.
Actually my swim suit, which I now wisely wear when I get near the water in the company of my son, comes with an attached vinyl pouch with triple sealing that then slots into a pocket, but it also carries a disclaimer about not being suited for electronic components. The one time I used the vinyl pouch, moisture still got in and I since decided that the lesser of the two risks was to leave electronic items ina beachbag high and dry but unattended. I agree, if swimming is going to become a more regular occurrence, which it now seems to be because my 3.5 year old can't get enough of the beach, thenI need to get some new equipment that can handle the electronic paraphernalia that everyone now carries around.
I need one of these:

Great for sailors. Take it in the water with you. BTW, I think you were lucky on both counts with the key and phone.
Cheers,
Swamp
Attila, this may not apply to your key problem, but my
Cayman
has been in the shop 2 weeks out of its 6 week lifetime. It started with poor key function (hood/trunk not opening, seat/mirror memory lapses and the red check light coming on indicating disabled passenger air bag and (once) battery/alternator failure. The diagnostics generatered 30 pages of error codes. Reprogramming the computer cleared these for a while, then they re-appeared. At Porsches advice the computer bus module was replaced and finally the key control module was replaced. I have had it now for two days and things seem to be OK. I think mine was the only
Cayman
for which the dealer has had problems. I hope all is well with yours and mine in now up to the JD Powers standard!
Good luck,
Arctic Silver
articsilver,
Sounds like you've been through a though time. I hope those days are over for you. I doubt I am having a similar problem, because my other key works fine.
I'll let you guys know what the dealer says after i take it in. I'm going in a week from Saturday.
