Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all. I have an issue: the backlights on the cluster information display (the ones with the beige bulb base) on my 1998 986 are remaining lit even after the car is turned off. Here's the background. I had a bulb burned out on the speed-outside temp display the middle one). I thought I had a good bulb from a previous bulb swap out (on my previous 2000 986), but that spare turned out not to be good. So I took the known good bulb from the odometer-trip display and swapped it into the speed-temeperature display. I did NOT put the bad bulb into the odometer-trip display backlighting socket -- it is open/empty. (I am waiting for some replacement bulbs to arrive). In the meantime the two always lit displays completely drained my battery. Does the cluster somehow recognize that one of the sockets is empty and keeps the other displays lit as a message of sorts? Or do I have a bigger electrical issue? Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

POST 2Original post

Put the car on a battery maintainer, and when the bulb(s) come replace them. Then operate as normal and see what happens.

POST 3Original post

any other lights stay on, like interior lights, trunk, engine compartment...? or just the 2 lights on the dash..?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just the 2 backlights on the instrument cluster. Have it on my tender/trickle charger. Very weird.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just got my new bulbs. Battery will be plan B. Maybe ECU/BCU or whatever drives the cluster just got in a weird state and needs a hard reset. Will post what I find out.

POST 7Original post

Check that the push buttons in the cluster for setting the clock and resetting the odometer are not stuck in. had this problem on a 986, one button was stuck, and it kept it alive and killed the battery.. -Eric

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good recommendation to check, but buttons don't appear to be stuck. I replaced the 3 beige bulbs and cluster backlights still stay on once car is turned off. However, if I then lock the car, the backlights go off. If I then unlock the car, the back lights remain off. Looks like the ECU/BCU/Immobilizer might have gotten in a weird state. I haven't tried a hard reset, i.e., disconnecting the battery, but will do it this morning.

Is this a new issue? I know a faulty ignition or light switch will cause this to happen. I think it was the light switch.
