Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My friend had a similar issue a few months ago when his WP was changed at a 'general' garage.
Leading evidence: 'Replace friend had a similar issue a few months ago' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check expansion tank' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Also check the expansion tank for cracks as it's a pretty common issue.

The engine sump oil seems to be clean with no emulsifying.

Sounds like an air lock due to poor filling technique to me

Many thanks to all of you for your help, there’s no water visible at the filler after I’ve run the car and it takes about a gallon of water to top up the system
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recently purchased a 2001 996. When I start and drive the car the low coolant level light starts to flash after about 20 minutes. There is no visible leak when the car is parked. When I remove the filler cap to top up the coolant the system is under pressure, even if I’ve left the car for a few weeks. The engine sump oil seems to be clean with no emulsifying. Does anyone have any ideas please?
Leave the car running on the drive until the fans come on (make sure your aircon isn't on). By then the leak, if there is one, will identify itself. Look for either dripping on the floor or steam coming from somewhere - like area around front wings.
It also sounds like you have an air lock in the cooling system.
Has the coolant been changed or a new water pump /thermostat/ radiators been fitted recently?
Try running the car with the secondary cap clip in the open position. Did you buy private or dealer with a warranty..? Hope you get it sorted. Also check the expansion tank for cracks as it's a pretty common issue.
He mentions the cooling system is pressurised when removing the cap, but not whether there is water in the header tank.
So on the balance of probability and here i am assuming that the header tank is empty, then i suspect that there is an air lock in the system which can be fixed by a vaccum purge.
My friend had a similar issue a few months ago when his WP was changed at a 'general' garage. They re filled the cooling system as they would a ford where the radiator is next to the engine and used this traditional method of removing the airlock. Needless to say his car overheated but using my trusty vaccum purge thingy i sucked the air lock out. I have to say it is one of the best and cheapist tools i have ever owned.
On the other hand it coub be a duff sensor..........or something else.

You have an air lock (or a leak but certainly an air lock).
Get someone to Vaccum purge (ie suck out the air from the cooling system) the cooling system for you. If you have a compressor then the tool from Ebay will cost you £32. There was a post about this last week and i pasted the tool from ebay.
It is a simple job and will take 10-15 minutes.
I hope this helps.
