Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. he said, oh yeah, it's important with porsches--in fact, if you don't drive it 600 miles a month, technically that violates the warranty on the battery and they don't have to cover it, even if you use a battery charger.

I left the car on the drive for 2 weeks came back and I had to open the car using the key - but the car started first time!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Stragest thing this AM: was about to head off to my first auto-X in the Cayman. Sat down, put the key in the ignition, and when I tried to crank the engine, all hell broke loose--loud clicking sound, lights flashing, all system warning lights flashed and signaled failure. At first I thought it was a dead battery, but it really seems more electrical...any ideas?
When is the last time that you drove the car? If it has been a few days, then on entry you are supposed to unlock the door with the key and then press the remote unlock or all kinds of alarm/disable stuff can happen.
As others have suggested.......could be a really low battery......or even a battery with a 'dead cell'.......these can cause all sorts of freaky things on a newer car and make it refuse to start.
Yup, you're all right. it was a nearly dead battery. VERY embarrasing, but at least the car is fine after a jump. guess i'd better get one of those battery chargers. oh well, i'll try autocrossing it next month...
Sorry to hear you missed the autox. Did you find out why the battery charge was so low? Were the lights left on or door open? If you aren't sure, you may still have a problem and the jump may only be a temporary fix.
well, i hadn't driven it in over a week..the dealer and the manual say that if you don't drive it for a week the battery will discharge..apparently all those computers run at a low level even if the car is off
Hmm weird...
My CS has sat idle for about 16 days once when I'd been away on business and it fired up first time. Have you got anything plugged into the accessory sockets?
Maybe your battery was bad to begin with. Get the Ctek smart charger (same as the Porsche) for a lot less. around $50.00 It's a MUST if you are not driving it everyday.
Wow! Thanks Fraser for reminding us about issue of not driving the car in a while. It's amazing that the Cayman uses up that much juice just sitting around for one week! I'm definitely going to have to go out and get the battery maintainer when I go on vacation!
I left the car on the drive for 2 weeks came back and I had to open the car using the key - but the car started first time!
The remote then reactivated and all was working again... no battery probs.
update: the car was not locked.
so, i got it jumped yesterday and drove it for an hour. parked it in the garage. today: dead again. clearly the alternator or something is bad. going into the shop tuesday.
Gee, your comment makes me wish we had a voltmeter in the dash along with the missing oil temp gauge. Now that I think about it...why can't all this info be available in either the trip computer or in PCM????
fraser,
Before I left Friday morning to drive to the same AX you were going to, I hadn't started the Cayman in almost a month, and it started up just fine - I would take the car to the dealer and tell them what happened - you eaither have a problem with the battery, voltage regulator or alternator.
FYI, because I park my car in my garage, I never lock it when it's in there, and I think it uses less juice. I've never had a problem with a low battery even when I haven't driven the car for as long as 6 weeks.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but i always keep my carlocked in mygarage andnever leave the house without my keys (the spare key is in a combination safe). That said i usually don't drive my Cayman during the week and have not had any problems with the battery.
One more curious item: when I picked up the car, I asked if the battery was defective, and the serice guy said, 'probably not--it just sat at the dealer's a long time before you bought it'. I said i had never heard of a car where the battery went bad just from sitting around. he said, oh yeah, it's important with porsches--in fact, if you don't drive it 600 miles a month, technically that violates the warranty on the battery and they don't have to cover it, even if you use a battery charger. I was rather appalled at that statement but didn't really say anything as they had just given me a new battery. still...
Fraser and others
I just read all the comms on the batt problem. I have the same problem with my C4 (964). Batt dead after a week or so! Ordered a new Cayman thinking that it will be great having a car with no probs! Still, I can't wait for next January(07).
Skyhgh
A friend of mine just had to replace the battery on his Boxster. The dealer said that P-cars have to have over 6,000 miles per year on the odometer for the battery to be covered under warranty. From fraser's note above, it sounds like the rule needs to be extended, if the car is less than 12 months old, the car has to have at least have an average of 600 miles per month.
What more incentive do we need to get these Caymans out on the highway?
