Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, Had a PPI done on a 2006 Cayman S that I am thinking about buying. Everything checked out fairly well for the "big" issues- i.e. bore scoring and IMS . One thing that has me concerned, they noticed the oil level was "overfilled" and also reported that there is an oil leak (see image below). Could these be related? If overfilling affects the engine, would it cause this, and what needs to be done to fix it? RMS replaced? Thanks in advance... Ron

POST 2Original post

Welcome to Planet-9. I am not seeing a picture. Regardless, I cannot think of any strong connection between overfilling and an oil leak. Maybe if it was overfilled by several quarts, the oil level would reach the level of the crankshaft and generate an egg beater effect, causing some overpressure in the crankcase. In that regard, any reputable shop should check crankcase "pressure" using a manometer at the oil filler cap . -4 to -6 inches of water is the sign of a healthy engine. A signficant overpressure could potentially force out the various shaft oil seals in the engine, the RMS being one of them. High positive pressure can be caused by a failed AOS . You may not be aware but the Cayman digital dash oil level indication does not show how much an engine is overfilled. It is frustrating. There is no dipstick.
