Suggestion

When replacing earth straps it is good practice to clean the attachment points on both the body work and the power unit.

Suggestion

I think it'd be worth just whipping that off and giving it a clean , maybe replace the nut with a SS one on both ends , then you know it's good.

Suggestion

There tends to be a bit of a potential cost saving to use a local supplier who can make up an earth lead, which although critical, does not take any complex engineering capability to assemble..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looks like I need to swap out my earth strap due to a bit of self diagnosis, any hints? These seem to be a fairy common cause of issues and when removed are completely rusted out. Are there different sizes can I do this at home, location of strap etc? Thanks guys.

POST 2Original post

It's at the front (gearbox end) right handside of the engine next to cylinder 6 coil pack. This thread on renntech will help. Faulty ground strap location ? I finally believe after all these months thanks to members here,I have found the problem to my starting issues, a faulty ground strap ! Does someone have a photo or can tell me where this is located on my 2002 911/996 ? I live 200 yards from the ocean and everything rusts here, and I believe it's... www.renntech.org

POST 3Original post

Watched a recent YT video where his failed to start. It was that corroded the wire separated from the body connector when touched. New cable fixed the problem completely. I live near a battery supplier who will also make up cables with proper crimped ends / glued heatshrink sleeving. That said I’d probably go OEM.

POST 4Original post

In terms of size, if you match the approximate thickness of the starter motor cable copper core (if insulated) then you should be fine. When replacing earth straps it is good practice to clean the attachment points on both the body work and the power unit. if there might be much in the way of corrosion around the bodywork fixing point after cleaning down to bright metal, it might be an idea to smear some grease or petroleum jelly/Vaseline over the top of the completed assemblage...? There tends to be a bit of a potential cost saving to use a local supplier who can make up an earth lead, which although critical, does not take any complex engineering capability to assemble.. I do tend to go for O.E. perhaps when considering how long the original lasted...? On the other hand it is possible to improve on Porsche quality on occasion...? Thinking RUF, Singer et all...? (-: Good luck in your choices..

POST 5Original post

If you get one made, it needs to be finely stranded copper, otherwise it will fail in no time due to the movement between the engine and body!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all your replies, I will go OEM for the cable, any videos on swapping out? I ve had a look around and can’t see any, I saw the Renntech discussion and the pic, thanks for the link, but couldn’t work out what that picture related too within the engine. Is it something I can attempt or should I just hand to my local Porsche specialist

POST 7Original post

The company I mentioned is Multicell in Leicester which seem to have several branches. That said Leicester is their head office so not sure their depots have the same offerings! A couple of years ago they made up some battery cables for a friends caterham seven - they were better than the OEM cables.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yup, just checked mine, it’s in good nick and probably been replaced at some point. Next port of call is the CTS sensor, any way of checking this in situ o will I have to remove which will involve drawing some coolant?

POST 9Original post

Reading this with interest guys, will check mine as part of preventative maintenance. Is this just a short cable or quite long? Looking online and there’s a few different cables come up?

POST 10Original post

I think it'd be worth just whipping that off and giving it a clean , maybe replace the nut with a SS one on both ends , then you know it's good.

You think so, it looks pretty new to me but I will take your advice, it’s one of the easier jobs so no biggy

POST 12Original post

Actually it's a bolt but yes it's rusty , your entire starter/charging system and loads of other stuff is relying on that being tip top.

POST 13Original post

The earth strap is quite exposed where it fixes to the body. It might look good but inside quite corroded. My car at 22 years old its one of those cheap things that is pre-emptive maintenance. I’ve also read that the Y cable between the starter / alternator can be problematic too though this is a bit more involved to change.

POST 14Original post

Recently had the Y-cable replaced on mine whilst the engine was out, the hot start issue that I’ve lived with for many years has now been resolved.

POST 15Original post

Martin Hill does a good vid on Y cable replacement.
