I'm cross-posting this from ******** to get some additional input
Sorry, I didn't use the search feature for this because I wasn't sure how to phrase it.
This is a 2007
Boxster S
. If the car is not running, I can run through the gears just fine, no binding or anything.
With the car running, when you push the clutch in, it will not go into gear. If you really push on the shifter, the car tries to move a bit, however it will not engage. I'm guessing there is a problem with the clutch master cylinder, but as this is my first
Porsche
and first hydraulic clutch, I am unsure. Also, on a semi-related issue, could this also cause the clutch to slip because of insufficient pressure?
Thanks everyone.
First thing to check is for a hydraulic issue with the clutch system, yes. Make sure your brake fluid reservoir is full: the clutch master pulls from that. Typically if it's low enough that the clutch MC sucks air it'll throw a brake warning light, but good to check that anyway. Also check around the clutch master and under the car at the rear for any fluid leaks. If that's not it then quite possible either your clutch master or slave cylinder seals have failed.
Issues with the clutch hydraulics would not cause the clutch to slip, no. The clutch default state is engaged, the clutch hydraulics are what release it. If your clutch was slipping before this and now it won't release it's entirely possible that there's some issue in the clutch assembly itself but I'm no expert on that.
Take you car to the nearest sports car shop and have a new master cylinder put in. Then have the shop check the clutch for wear. Most likely not knowing the history of the car, you should be good to go.
Well finally had the car taken to a local independent shop and this is what they found:
From the shop manager:
The green circle shows one of the rivets that holds a set of spring "fingers" in place. That rivet is cracked, and the back half of it is folded upward. The structure that the rivet is fastened to, the "frame" of the pressure plate, is cracked. It's an ODD failure, I've seen dozens and dozens of Boxster clutches and this is the first failure of this specific type I've seen.
Well that's pretty random, lol.
Well, look on the bright side: you're getting a new clutch so you shouldn't have to have this work done again for quite a while.
Please take the time to introduce yourself and your

Your description of the issue sounds like the classic test for a dragging clutch. With the engine running, try to put the car in gear. If there is resistance to going into gear, reach over and turn off the ignition while still pressing on the shift lever. If it goes right into gear when the engine stops - the clutch is dragging (not fully releasing) and the synchro are preventing you from getting it into gear.
