Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello, My 2011 987.2 S has started making a strange noise from the brakes. I first noticed it a couple of months ago whilst stop/starting in a drive thru. It's hard to describe the noise so Google hasn't been much help. I think these could be related; Creaking sound when pushing brake pedal | Planet-9 Porsche Forum Help me diagnose this brake noise! (video) | Planet-9 Porsche Forum But there's not enough information to be sure and they were both warranty claims which means replace everything rather than diagnose. Here's a video of the sound: Noisy Brakes - Cayman 987.2 It happens on both sides and only when a) the brakes are hot (i.e. a 20-30 minute normal drive) and b) at a standstill - I can feel the creaky-ness in the brake pedal. That's how I noticed it initially, the pedal felt crunchy so I did my window down and heard the sound. I had a Porsche Specialist look at it and they did the following; "Strip, clean and re-grease" "Brake repair kit" "4x Shims" Cost: £310 They also mentioned the discs & pads were the brand "Pagid" which they don't use; there's only 2 brands they do use (forget what they were now, never heard of them). They weren't really clear with what "solved" it, I got the impression they weren't sure and initially it seemed fine but today it started again. Any suggestions? Cheers, S

POST 2Original post

Is this a PDK Cayman ? If it's the 6 speed, don't start releasing the clutch before you release the brakes. If it's a PDK , come to a complete stop so your clutches disengage. What you're doing now is not good for the brakes or the clutch(es). And when you have a chance - please visit New Member Introductions and introduce yourself and your Porsche. Lots of photos is a good thing..

POST 3Original post

It's a PDK and it was at a standstill, in park when I took the video - this noise doesn't happen if the car is moving. Why is pressing brakes at a standstill not good?

POST 4Original post

Pressing the brakes at standstill is fine. My thinking was it was in gear and perhaps creeping a bit despite the brakes being pressed. As a WAG - stock pads may cure the issue.

POST 5Original post

Ok, phew. I've just contacted the specialist to get it back in - the main reason is to look at other noises it has just started making (blowing exhaust, click-y engine on cold start, rattling when pulling away) but will mention the brakes again. One of the other posts suggested dust boots, so I'll ask them to take a look at those.

POST 6Original post

For future reference, in case it helps anyone else; it was my driver's side brake pad. The specialist, whom had failed to fix it twice, suggested next step was replace both callipers... I went elsewhere. New specialist re-seated brake pads, which lasted a couple of days, after that they replaced the pads and that fixed it. They didn't even charge me for the reseat attempt.

POST 7Original post

My 987.2CS was sitting for couple of weeks and just today started making the exact noise from standstill when press and release the paddle! brake pads and rotors still look fine and 75% , is that all they do? just replace the brake pad? I feel something needs to be greased up a little. (passenger side on left handed drives)

POST 8Original post

That is exactly what I thought when I first noticed it, sounds like something needs some grease. The first garage had the same thought so they cleaned, rebuilt and greased... Couple of days later I went for a spirited drive to test it and as soon as brakes were warm, noise was back. Second garage attempted reseating the pads, noise returned so they replaced the pads - been 2 months now, noise long gone.

POST 9Original post

I'm still doing R&D to understand what could be the issue, these two video helped me understand the components last night. if its only brake pads, I can DYI it but if goes to fluid flush or if booster job is needed that's totally out of my comfort.

POST 10Original post

Are brake pads specifically for the right & left or can they be fitted to either side? If the latter; you could try swapping pads over and see if the noise follows. If it does then you know changing the pads will resolve it.

POST 11Original post

that would help thanks, I believe they can fit either side Cliff in his video is using the CRC disc Brake Quite paste, but when checking CRC technical spec it says to be used for non-shimmed disc pads, but we do have disc pads, I feel the creaking noise is coming out of those shims, the part that goes inside the brake pistons, possibly got corotated, but the first mechanic changed yours and issue didn't go away!. also it could be the glue that attach shims to the brake pads. this video is also helpful
