On reflection, I probably didn’t reduce the torque setting sufficiently to accommodate use of anti-seize and over-torqued them.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My research tells me that these three M8 studs should be tightened to 24 ft/lbs lthough tere are various conflicting values here and there. Anyone albe to confirm? Also, does anyone know if these are available to purchase separately, without having to buy the entire top assembly as pictures?

POST 2Original post

I work at a fastenings company. If you search for self clinching studs that may yield something similar. The head looks quite large - something to be mindful of.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll take a look. They're 25mm long, M8 x 1.25 and the flanged head is 14mm.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Weird that that these are so difficult to find. Closest I've found in the UK are these so I've ordered a set in hope they work out. BC Top Mount Stud M8 x 1.25 25mm Overall Length I-03 ONLY BC Top Mount Stud M8 x 1.25 25mm OL I-03 www.bc-racing.co.uk

POST 5Original post

I’d have gone for them. A lot we have at work are smaller diameter have very small thin heads - almost for flush fitting.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I snapped a couple of mine whilst re-torquing before even getting to 20 ft/lbs. I noticed the others were already showing signs of neck stretch at the base of the thread, so they're either made from damp chalk, or given that 24 ft/lbs on a M8 1.25 thread is grade 10.9 territory, I suspect they were not of this calibre.

POST 7Original post

Wouldn't it be more logical just to fit new top mounts?

POST 8Original post

Just another note - the top mounts are quite expensive. You can get the 997 C4S top mounts for virtually half the price and they're the same. I paid something like £70 instead of £130.

Yes, other than they are relatively new, as are the bearings and rubber seal etc. On reflection, I probably didn’t reduce the torque setting sufficiently to accommodate use of anti-seize and over-torqued them. I’ll install the replacements dry.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Replacement 10.9 top studs arrived today and worked a treat after pressing in with the vice.
