Back in the day when showrooms were full I tested a bunch of new 991s from a Turbo to the base C2, and I quickly decided that the base C2 was a much better everyday road car, but unfortunately after a few months I felt like I was in a Toyota, so then I went for a GT car and that ended up being no good for the road, so I had to sell up and take a step back to decide what I really wanted.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What car did you move onto after your 996, or what will you likely move onto? I've only had mine a little over a year and i always buy a car with a vision in my head of what i want to do to it and how i want it to look/ drive, once i get there i start getting itchy feet. I hate that im like this as i always end up with a much better car than when i purchased it and then someone else gets the benefit i suppose i find the joy in the journey as much as the end result! So this leads me onto querying what others ended up going to afterwards, for better or worse!

POST 2Original post

I'm exactly the same and it genuinely frustrates me that I always want more. In terms of what to go for next, I just end up going around in circles, if I have a turbo I crave the thrill of an N/A. If I have N/A I crave the torque. I think with the 996 I think by the time I add up how much it will end up costing me that will stop me from moving on. Your car sounds pretty special and if you love the way it drives then I guess a GT car is the only step if you want to remain with Porsche.

POST 3Original post

Went backwards (for me, better!)......993.....then a G series 3.2.....at this rate next car will be a horse.

POST 4Original post

I went all the way through the range up to the latest one at the time, the 991.2, but found it lacking and not exciting. So I sold up and spent a year or so wondering what to do, then once I'd decided on a plan, in the same month I went retro and bought a 1989 930 and commissioned a 996 RS based custom build which should be the ultimate road/track car. Then I've got a 997 as a daily driver.

POST 5Original post

I got itchy feet when i seen a low mileage 987 spyder with the right lightweight options, but didn’t move quickly enough and someone else beat me to it. I guess i would only swap for a special/limited edition something now, so keep enjoying mine until something really “right” comes along.

POST 6Original post

Straight into a 997.1 manual coupe.............and then i bought my neighbours 996.1 and love them both to bits. But the 996 will be going shortly.

Thankfully i never crave turbo shove, im firmly in N/A camp or id be the same! I've had two people recently, who went from a c2 to a 996.2 gt3, tell me they liked their C2 better on the road and to only consider the change if tracking, which i dont do. And, i dont have the 70-80k to spend haha I also spent a couple of weekends ago blatting round Wales with a 991.2 gt3 and a 992 gt3 touring and both kept saying their cars didnt have much left in them in keeping with the 996, albeit the car is tweaked quite a lot!

These are a great shout, the older i get, the more i can see the light in floppy tops!

POST 10Original post

you can go backwards or forwards, cant really lose either way I think the base 992 is great all round car

POST 11Original post

I think any base Carrera is the best road car, that's how it was designed, but unfortunately they don't feel very special, maybe because it's too good and has no real foibles to focus on, so it lacks character.

POST 12Original post

I have always been the same but I'm getting on now. (45 this year) I need to think about my retirement and rather than spend even more on the next car / dream and vision, invest it so decided to call it an end to my car journey with the 996 and just use that as attended. euro trips and track days and so on. make some memories in it with the family

POST 13Original post

I think itchy feet affects all of us petrolheads at some point.. and for others, continually! It's the nature of the beast and is why we're driving Porsches instead of Ford Focuses or VW Golfs in the first place. But I think the itchy feet can also be a curse. It means you're never quite happy with what you have, and are always craving the next thing. When for most of us, we're driving bloody Porsches! These are cars of peoples's dreams, which our inner child would be super happy with! I think we all should be proud of what we already have. I was feeling itchy like you but a revelation for me was - I watched the whole of this video showing cars come and go at a local Porsche meet, which was very interesting. Watching this I realised that I'm not very fussed about the newer Porsches. There seems to be more of them around, and they lack personality of the older cars. They're also bigger, can feel numb to drive, and you can't use all the power on UK roads. Also the older cars are cool, but less usable. Watching that video I realised that I got most excited seeing the 996s. I've got the 996 bug, I like that they're the underdog, I prefer the personality of them, I like talking to the owners. The 996 gets under your skin. When I see a 996 on the road I get excited. I think "that's another guy like me". When I see a 991, I think "that's probably a dentist " So from there I realised I was sticking with my 996 but I'm addressing all the issues over time- better brakes, tires, suspension, lights, gearshift, and eventually a 3.9 conversion, plus some cosmetic tweaks. The lower price point of the 996s mean you have more fiscal room to do these things, and to make it your own. Much more of an interesting journey than a bland 991/992 IMO.

POST 14Original post

After 3 years of rear engine RWD experience, I ditched my 996 Targa. I was afraid of cornering at high speed; one occasion saw me looking the wrong way around at a roundabout as the pendulum effect caught me out. Also because I was not adept at handling such a car (the previous steed being a Mk4 Golf GTI). After this I decided to go 4WD and replaced the 996 with a 997. Updated looks both inside and out and the confidence in taking corners returned. It was a much more fun car for me and stayed in the garage for 7 years. The only downside was the steering feel had gone compared to the earlier RWD 996.

POST 15Original post

I've had my 996 for 8 years now and it's still just superb to drive, i could only replace it with another porsche which would deffo have to be older maybe an SC or 3.2 both sound investment but not as capable as the 996, So i just stick with the car i know it basically owes me nothing now i've had that long and it's in great shape, maybe another 8 years of smiles.
