Also some epoxies bond to plastic using heat which causes striations or micro webbing in the plastic which can never be removed.

Suggestion

I could force the issue using lots of heat and a pry tool but then I risk destroying an otherwise working set of headlights.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Looking at a potential purchase from overseas. Dealer is unsure if they can be removed safely without damaging the lights.

POST 2Original post

Yes use fishing line and polish the glue off and them ppf clear

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you. What would you use to remove the glue? Rubbing alcohol or something similar?

POST 4Original post

That almost looks like they painted the underside of the headlight lens. Zoom in on the lower leading edge.

POST 5Original post

If the outside of the lens is painted, you can take it to a place that does headlight restorations and itll sand right off. My car came like this and now they look brand new. If its a plastic cover it should come off with a little heat and fishing line or floss Before: After:

Thanks, this is good to know.

POST 7Original post

For glue / adhesive removal, try Goof Off or Goo Gone first before anything harsher or heat. Those are citrus based and won't damage paint or plastic. (Perhaps park in the sun a short while first).

POST 8Original post

The should be removable but no promises. My 99 came with covers and Ive never been able to get them off.

POST 9Original post

3M makes a wipe style restoration kit which is pretty easy after you remove the cover. @EVOMMM idea is the best IMO.

It wouldnt surprise me. My problem is that they are so tight and snug against the lenses that its basically impossible to get a fishing line underneath. I could force the issue using lots of heat and a pry tool but then I risk destroying an otherwise working set of headlights.

Yeah man it doesnt seem like its worth it. Worst part about applying heat and older lights like ours is theyll craze around edges and corners. Also some epoxies bond to plastic using heat which causes striations or micro webbing in the plastic which can never be removed.
