So it was either buy a 996 or 997 RS, or have a 996 built up from a bare wide body shell with all RS running gear but an in-house 3.9L engine designed for the road and low down torque.
Leading evidence: 'Use so much' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'value, i didn't want something' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run gear' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The other issue was the value, I didn't want something that I was afraid to use in case it affected the value too much, every RS I looked at I'd always look at the mileage and do a little calculation to work out how many miles I could do without having too much impact, I'd see one at 25k miles and think I could probably do 5k miles and keep it's value, but then once it goes above 30k then I'm on a downward slide and over 40k it's a really hard sell.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

They seem to have dropped a fair bit if my memory serves me (which it usually doesn't) but I think these were barking on £200k during the mad spell. £130k seems to be the norm now , on CC at least.
My absolute dream car just after a GT40

A friend sold his the other week at 150k and it was a very good example. Another friend also has one but it doesn't get used so much. The other day I got a good look around it and a sit in it, also one of my dream cars too!
I occasionally get buyers remorse about my build and wonder if I shouldn't have just bought a 996 RS and put up with the engine characteristics that I'm not a huge fan of on the road. I didn't want something that I had to thrash about and at low revs these feel a bit flat.
I was looking at 997 RSs and once they're over 40k miles then they're a really hard car to sell.
In the end I decided I'd just build the car I want, accept that I'm going to lose 50% of anything I spend instantly and know that mileage won't matter because the clock will be reset to zero and it is very likely to take me more than a decade to do 30k miles so I can put it out of my mind.
I reckon if a 996 GT3 RS came up for sale with 120K miles on it but in good condition and well looked after , it'd still sell for like £110k. There comes a point where mileage is irrelevant in some cases it actually helps.
Cobra 289's still sell for a fortune no matter what the condition , sometimes barnfind tatty ones with nice patina and history go for more than fully restored ones.
Barn-find 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 gets a dusting off | New Zealand Classic Car
It seems that the coveted barn find has been making a resurgence of late, with the huge French haul late last year, and now this. It’s a 1964 Shelby Cobra 289 — one of only 579 produced — and was found, in the condition in which you see it, in a Vermont barn. View fullsize Image copyright […]

I'd be amazed if it sold at all.
I spent years watching the market, I was ready to pull the trigger before covid and it was all about mileage then, not as bad as Ferraris but you could get a price difference of £25k on two absolutely identical 997 RSs purely because one had 15,000 miles and one had 40,000 miles.
During covid everything went a bit mad but it seems we're back to the same situation now, about a year ago I was watching three identical orange 997's with prices from £115k - £150k, all from really reputable dealers and the only difference was mileage.
Colour is also a huge differentiator, I still can't get over the green 997 at JZM. I said I was buying the next green one that came up no matter what the price, then one came up at £170k and I laughed and waited for it to drop, but it sold within a week.
Anyway, the point I'm making is that in my opinion 996's seem even more fickle than the 997, so I don't see them selling even with high mileages.
I disagree , at the end of the day it's still a GT3 RS and they're very rare , at that mileage you wouldn't have to worry about driving it either , in fact the opposite. I don't think we'll ever see one sub £100K unless it's had a disagreement with Armco.
By the way I'm looking forward to seeing your build come together, it's going to be a very special car that one.
The price difference I can see on PH is £60k between the cheapest and highest priced one, it seems like mileage is the only thing making the difference.
I don't know if we'll see them drop below £100k, weird things happen in life, I remember hovering over a beautiful 1989 Porsche 930, low mileage and it was £25k, my mate said I was mad paying that for an old 911 Turbo and said give it a few years and they'll be even cheaper.
We all know what happened there.
Funnily enough I read a story in This Is Money this morning saying that pre-2016 Defenders were shooting up in price and better than money in the bank. I might hold onto mine.
Not quite sure how you come to that conclusion on the engine of the 996? They don’t feel any more flat than any other nasp engine at low revs. And what’s low…quite punchy up to 6k, Pretty torquey too. As to value…it’s subjective but I always take the view that the experience of driving the car is where the value is, there is much less value in owning and hardly driving. So the mileage/ price delta is just the cost of experiencing the car tbh.
Yeah I agree, same as my 930, not actually that bad really, then it goes berserk at high revs, but I wanted high torque at low revs.
It’s hard to explain in a forum post but the characteristics of the RS engine was like the characteristics of a Civic Type R engine, it just made me drive like an idiot revving it to death and I wanted all the rest of the car except that - and it also helped that one of my oldest friends has a section of his Porsche Indy business doing totally bespoke full club sport type cars on the 996 platform.
So it was either buy a 996 or 997 RS, or have a 996 built up from a bare wide body shell with all RS running gear but an in-house 3.9L engine designed for the road and low down torque.
The bespoke car sounded more exciting and different.
If we took out the 'RS' and inserted 993 that statement could be used in various threads
Shaking like a shitting dog every time you use a car worrying about value and mileage completely ruins the ownership experience. Unless of course you just put them in storage and treat it as an asset.
I was at a 'specialist' service centre the other day a driver dropped off a Senna for a service stating "It's only done 100 miles since the last one and 40 miles of that was bringing it here"
The fashion for low mileage suits me very well at the moment because I’m out of the country 48 weeks of the year, so my cars get very low mileage from me, but that’s only because I’m away, otherwise I reckon on about 5k miles a year, depending on how many fun cars I have, which is still low but it’s 5,000 pure fun miles, just because I can, which would no doubt have Greta Thunberg weeping into the mic.
I’m not sure that Porsche even spend that much time worrying if their 911s will make it past 50k miles, if they sell a new one today then there is a good chance that it’ll take over a decade to get beyond 50k.
I'm not sure the RS engine is any different to the GT3 is it? They appear to pull really hard from low down and then rev out as well. My Cayman S pulled hard low down as does my C2 and the Turbo too. even off boost , the only one I've had you had to work at was my 2.7 Boxster but what a joy that was.
The Turbo that's for sale on here is a classic example of a car that you could buy and never have to worry about adding miles to, 150K or 250k , it's all about condition and how it drives. You'd need to factor in more annual spending over a garage queen but what a machine.
I think it’s about feel rather than anything else and the GT3RS feels like it has most of its power higher up in the range, and so as a consequence you tend to spend most of your time there, at license busting speeds.
I’ve spent most of my life driving/riding stuff with those characteristics and so I wanted something that felt different. The cars they’ve made so far seem to hit that spot, it’s got all the good bits of an RS but you don’t feel like thrashing it every time you get into it.
