Plus gas penetration fluid and gentle persusion is the way to go and use new bolts with hi temp anti sieze compound such as Tygris Nickel loaded compound.

I usually buy OEM parts Bosch/Mann etc and only use OPC when necessary but I am aware that all cars seem to have their odd foibles and sometimes Porsche parts are better but, if anyone has any opinions, please fire them my way.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I picked the car up last week, it's a 2001 Targa which I got for a good price but, it needed a couple of things doing but, on the whole I'm pleased with it. To date the known faults are; 1. Exhaust is blowing - she's going into a garage today to have it looked at and to see what the problem is. 2. Targa roof has a leak which appears to be at the top of the drivers side A pillar which will need sorting. 3. The PCM doesn't work/turn on but, when I plugged the car in over the weekend I did notice that during the scan, it said 'PCM - does not exist' so I'm guessing it's fuse or, it's really dead if it's not being detected? 4. The day after getting her she started to run rough and a scan identified a misfire on cylinder 5. 5. Temperature failure warning light illuminates but, I think I've now worked out what I need to change. 6. Sometimes when I put the car into reverse I get the cog symbol and 'selector lever not engaged' which I haven't looked at yet. Edit - more jobs found! 7. Rear screen demister not working. 8. Gear lever body - no illumination. I'm sure many more jobs are going to materialise but, my plan at the moment - and please feel free to offer advise/alternative ideas - is to sort out the exhaust blow, do an oil and filter change, new plugs and coil packs, gearbox filter/oil and get the switch for the warning light and at least with that as a starting point, I'll know what I've done and I can work forward from there. I usually buy OEM parts Bosch/Mann etc and only use OPC when necessary but I am aware that all cars seem to have their odd foibles and sometimes Porsche parts are better but, if anyone has any opinions, please fire them my way. Hoping to get the car spot on by the end of spring, ready for some serious use in the summer!

POST 2Original post

Good luck mate, post some pics when you get chance. Gearbox oil change would be my starting point. Targa leaks are not uncommon from what i understand but can be costly.... assuming the roof all works as it should..?

Just waiting for prices for the service parts but the gearbox service is one if the first jobs to be done. The Targa roof had some work, blinds, cables and guide tubes done in August '21, about 5k ago and the blinds and roof operate well.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did a bit of a read up this afternoon and it seems, if I'm reading it right, that the common practice is to uprate the 996 coil packs to the 997 ones? If this is the case, I assume all six will need replacing at the same time? What plugs are recommended? I put the reg into GSF and it came up with some Bosch ones. I read a thread re best spark plugs and it gave another Bosch plug and when I checked to see if they were available from GSF, their website said they were incompatible with the car?

Thanks for the info. I've just been on to design911 this morning and they're just checking off my shopping list for me. Frustratingly, the Beru coil packs may take a week to get here but I don't want to go for their other option as I do get paranoid about things like that!!

POST 15Original post

Beru are OE replacement and the ones to go for, yep a bit frustrating about the delivery delay. When I did mine I removed the exhaust back boxes and mountings to gain better access and I'd recomend this (I still found it tricky). Removing the exhaust back boxes etc could be another difficult job due to corroded fastenings/studs etc. Previously, I had just removed the whole exhaust system inc manifolds and replaced with new SS items held in the with titanium studs/nuts etc. Don't try and remove the manifolds as the studs with snap and will have to jig drilled out which is a nightmare. Also go easy when removing the current coil pack bolts as these can be siezed and you don't want to break those. Plus gas penetration fluid and gentle persusion is the way to go and use new bolts with hi temp anti sieze compound such as Tygris Nickel loaded compound. Good luck!
