I used a weight knob on my Rs4 that was the same, used my baby sons sock and it worked spot on but yes its an issue with these.

Funny was just thinking this at the weekend, have the wooden style but have used a weighted one in the past as well.

Let me check my garage - on my last GT3 (996) I have a 997 knob made with the 996 housing, looks A1.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I like a bit of weight in my gear shifts. I find the standard 996 manual shifter a bit too lightweight, but I don't want to go for metal knob due to getting to cold / hot. I really like the look of wooden gear knobs, but these are generally lightweight. There are a couple of US-only heavier weighted knobs, but need to ship to UK and not all offer this.
Anyone got decent solution for weighted gear knob?
Funny was just thinking this at the weekend, have the wooden style but have used a weighted one in the past as well.
Im tempted to remove and drill out then add something in. Anyone have some spent plutonium I could use? Seriously though would be good to try and add something in where possible.
I don't think it'll ever feel like a 944 or 993, but a short shift kit it does make it feel a lot like an MX-5 and a lot of people love that feel. The downside is it also exaggerates any notchyness (technical term) and I found when in a rush I was missing gears.
Personally, I have bought the 2010 onwards 997.2 GT2/GT3 RS linkage 3 times over now in different 996's. If the cables are fresh so it glides nicely without resistance between the engagement points, then I think it makes for a rather nice shift action.
The best thing about it is that it feels more positive and mechanical, yet retains the silky feeling of the standard shift. The part is 'only' ~£350 from Porsche and comes with new cable ends/ball joints. Not cheap, but also not so expensive for a nice modification to one of the major interaction points with the car.
I have a Function First classic shift knob on order which should hopefully be winging its way across the Atlantic in the next week or two. It should add a bit of weight versus the standard knob and complement the Numeric shift mechanism I already have installed. I've opted for the delrin knob over the aluminium as I was wary of the too hot/cold scenario
I bought one of those for my Boxster, it's a great bit of kit, the only downside is it gets very cold in the mornings . I will probably order one for my 996.

PM me your mobile no. and I'll whatsapp a picture - when I find it over the next few days.
(I was going to keep it for my next GT3 - but I'm sure I could have first dibs to have it back)
I used a weight knob on my Rs4 that was the same, used my baby sons sock and it worked spot on but yes its an issue with these. Those ones I listed above do some with derlin outer to get away from this.
I have a 997 knob paired with a standard 996 gaiter & one of Alex's modified SSK's. I find the shape much nicer than the original, & keeps things sort of OEM ish. I do like the idea of some added weight though, so I'll give that a try.
Cheers Dan - your garage is like a treasure chest! PM sent
Thanks for all the tips & ideas everyone. Seems this topic has a fair amount of interest, so I'm surprised most of the solutions are only in US and no one in UK sells anything.
I have just bought a pool ball of ebay to have a go at making a different shifter, its super cheap and just a bit of a fun project rather than a serious solution. However it has a nice weight to it and shouldnt get too hot or cold
I got a weighted Delrin (I think it weighed about a pound) from Raceseng for my GT86 and it made the gearshift so much better, cost with shipping was a bit pricey IIRC but well worth it
The 'muricans like their stick shifts... interesting that the likes of the V10 M5 and Audi S8 were offered in the US with a manual transmission.
I suspect we have the US market to thank for Porsche persisting with a manual in the 911.
