Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all
Thanks for letting me join,
I have just purchased a 02 plate 996 cabriolet at auction
Sight unseen with no keys - looks to be an abandoned repo due to having no road-tax.
The car has no key with it, I tried a mobile locksmith but he said the module under the seat appears to be wet/water damaged (likely due to roof letting water in over time) so he can’t code the key?
When power is put to battery dash comes on & mileage shows, but obviously I need a key
Any ideas what the best way to get a key is? Some suggested buying a used barrel, key, ECU etc but this might not be cost effective?
This is going to be a fun project & I’ll put up a proper thread soon.
Cheers guys
A
Strange the dash lights up without the key in ON position.
I think that's going to be a bit of a slog to get that working correctly. I don't know about that stuff but I imagine you'd need a used module , keys and ignition switch from a write off. Maybe a Boxster one will do , I don't know but good luck with that.
I just hope you didn't pay much for it.
You'll also need door locks won't you , incase the remote fails.
I recall seeing a YouTube video on a guy who did something similar. Bought a 996/997/986 (I can’t recall which) and the first issue he had was the key.
I’ll can’t seem to find it on YouTube now though. Sorry.
That's nice and cheap - so you have some head room to overcome some of the issues it may have...
As for the lack of key, I don't know of any way around just getting a new key. You will then need to have the key coded to the car. If the module is really water logged then you may need a new module. There are some breakers around that might be able to supply a replacement. Not sure what's involved in getting a module to work with the car. A good internet search is needed I think as I am sure others have walked this path before you.
1st thing I'd do before spending any money is undo the front bolts of the passenger seat runners, tilt the seat back so you have easy access to the alarm ECU. Take the cover over, give everything a good clean with a tooth brush and some IPS (battery disconnected from car to avoid damage), then a reet good blast with a hair dryer for an hour to dry everything out. I've had some dicky dos on my cab in the past with both the alarm ECU and power roof ECU that has been easily fixed with a good clean and dry.
Failing that, you can pick up 2nd hand alarm ECU with keys and barrel, etc.
Something similar to this package:

Although I reckon a good clean and dry will solve the problem.
Does anyone know what type of starter battery I need? Am I right in that it’s a 096 type? Such as this? Thanks again. Car is a 2002 996 911 with the 3.6L
Pardon our interruption...
I'd see if a 986 Boxster has the same ECU first , there's loads of them being broken for spares but 996's , hardly any . only total write offs and you're not necessarily going to get the keys with one of those (maybe 1)
