I have noticed a slight engine ticking when the engine is idle. I have only noticed it at idle because I sometimes get out and leave the car on, so it may also be at higher rpms as well. The sound can't be heard from inside and is loudest at the rear and by the side air vents.
I recently bought the car and had all the nessisary checks and inspections done, and the engine came back in perfect condition, including a bore scope, so bore scoring is not the issue. The sound was there from when I bought the car, but after just under a month of ownership it is still there so it doesn't seem to be a problem that occured from being sat in a garage for a few months.
Is a slight ticking sound normal? Does anyone know what could be the cause?
Mine had a tap/click sound that turned out to be a cracked line from the AOS to the intake manifold.
Line was slightly oily upon visual inspection and fell in two when I went to remove/ clean it.
2009 2.9 so different motor.
Porsche
engines make noise. That's normal. Since it is a new car to you and it did this from day one and it passed PPI, I'd just relax. At idle, you are probably hearing the fuel injectors firing. But keep listening for changes to the sound over time. You need to recognize the normal sounds your engine makes so you will notice when/if something odd starts.
Thanks, any idea how I could check this myself?
I have attached a video showing the sound it is making, and to correct myself earlier, the sound isn't audible from the rear, it seems to be coming only from the side vents
For reference I have a
2008 Cayman S
This is normal… YouTube want a bad motor sounds like..as long as your A) not using oil and B) don’t have the dread black soot all over the rear bumper then it’s probably not bore scoring.. change oil often and cut the old filters open for inspection…
You have a m-97 engine in your 08
Cayman S
. You need to keep that in mind when reading these responses as many have 9A1 engines which are different internals (different cylinder walls, different pistons, different oiling systems and depending on model different induction systems). I would change motor oil to Motul and leave it there. No more ticking sounds from lifters or the chain.
2.9L and mine kinda sounds like that. I'm using Motul and send the oil off for inspection every year. I also cut open the oil filter and everything is 100% with this engine. I'll inspect my AOS line like
Ric_in_RVA
mentioned.
its really the most you can do to prevent bore scoring etc.. when you buy a
Porsche
do your “do diligence “ before you buy, change oil, send it off if it needs to be and don’t let the motors sit and idle.. if that coating lets go and or starts letting chunks do bad things it’ll do it regardless and or eventually…
Reds-I know what you are talking about, but this is his (The The The Theo) thread (m-97) not 9A1. Totally different engine.
I use Mobil 1 5W50 oil and the previous owner serviced the car at the intervals recomended by
porsche
. I have the full service history, and everything has been replaced on time. The exception being the
next
service, due in 1 and half months where all the parts at the 16 year mark will need to be replaced.
Then all you can do is hope for a long healthy motor
They all still have hoses from AOS to intake...
In general ANY intake / vacuum leak can make noise on ANY engine....
All part of the problem solving.
