I have an 08 base
Cayman
that we didn’t drive for a few weeks and when we tried to start it we got the click. Tried charging battery, started right up the
next
time. Went to drive it a few days later…click. Now I go get the battery checked and it’s dead. One free replacement later and I hook up the new battery and it starts like normal. Problem solved! Nope. 1 week later I go to drive it and get the click a couple times. Do a little cursing and it finally starts normally. Same thing just happened again. I’m pretty certain it isn’t the battery so I’m thinking starter. Is there some other part of the
Porsche
starting system I need to check?
tl:dr - when car sits first attempt to start is met with just a “click” like the starter won’t turn. After I finally get it started it starts the rest of the day without issue. Is there any other component to suspect besides starter?
Possibly a balky starter solenoid or starter relay? I wonder if a diagnostic tool would give a reading on this issue.
I’ll have to pull out the Durametric tonight to check.
Before you condemn the starter I would check the battery. I know you said it's a new one. You could have a small parasitic drain that is killing the battery while the car sits. Or, less likely, there could be an issue with the charging system.
Edit: Or look below for information about the power distribution pin
I had the same problem. After replacing the battery and checking connections, I found a thread on this site about the ignition switch going bad. I replaced it and all the starting problems when away.
New batteries have been known to be bad. But I'm betting on a parasitic drain or the ignition switch or starter solenoid.
The cause can also be a corroded terminal for the power distribution block. A common problem for 987s that looks like a battery or a starter problem. See the fix here:
Great post Chitown388. Just finished watching the attached video and it was very informative. I wonder how many Indy shops are aware of this quick and simple remedy to what could be a vexing problem. I can only imagine how many batteries, starters, alternators have been replaced in search of a fix for this problem. I now feel prepared should I ever encounter this type of problem in the future.
