Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I also changed the transmission fluid to Redline, but since I did both at the same time I can't blame one or the other.

I'm not sure if there is a risk if you overfill it - on other cars I am used to filling until the oil starts to come out of the fill hole, but the 996 is supposed to be a few mm below that point.

I know that the short-throw version of the 997 shifter does this with the GT3 transmissions and that is why the standard 997 shifter is recommended for the GT3,
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but thought this one needed its own thread.
I installed a brand new 997 factory short shifter (99742498300), which is a big improvement, but seems a little notchy to me when going through the gears.
I am wondering if it needs some grease on the pivot points or possibly on the cables? The shifter had been used for about 6 months according to the seller, no visible grease on it, but there was on my old 996 shifter.
During installation, I aligned it with the proper tool, and also installed new cable ends at the shifter.
I also changed the transmission fluid to Redline, but since I did both at the same time I can't blame one or the other.
I do feel like it's friction at the shifter I am feeling, not in the transmission.
To answer my own question, yes, the pivot points are lubricated. Mine already came that way, but I added more (SuperLube, plastic safe and synthetic) so it seems like the binding is somewhere under the car.
While I don't have a 997 shifter, I do have a notchy 3rd gear with my B&M. After reading other people's threads and talking to the guys at Numeric... it seems like the culprit are the cables.
Well, Numeric wants to sell (better) cables so of course they blame the cables. My shifter was not notchy before the two changes I made, so I don't think it's the cables.
It's a bit difficult to gauge how much oil goes into the transmission, so I am wondering if I slightly underfilled it (I have over 2.5 quarts in there).
I'm not sure if there is a risk if you overfill it - on other cars I am used to filling until the oil starts to come out of the fill hole, but the 996 is supposed to be a few mm below that point.
Feels like it's all gears. Then I drive it a bit, then it feels fine. Then notchy again.
I might try readjusting the alignment one more time, and/or checking the fluid level.
When you say that do you mean it gets notchy during the same drive or it gets notchy on your next drive? If the latter, then it's probably the Redline needing to warm up. That's how my tranny/shifter works after I changed out the oem fill. As long as it's shifting normally when warm you're GTG.
Filled to the overflow of the drain hole, it was only a bit more fill. No real difference in the shifting.
I used to like Redline products and I even sold them, but I'm draining it and going with factory fill to eliminate the variable.
If that still doesn't make a difference, I will know it's the shifter or the cables.
Ah, the great oil wars. Local dealer didn't have it in stock (and wanted list price of $44 per liter) so I will pick up tomorrow at Porsche Marin, their parts are not open on Saturday.
While I wait, I was checking part numbers and found something interesting.
Transmission oil is 000-043-305-49.
Differential oil is 99991754600, which is now superceded to the
same
000-043-305-49.
Redline calls for 75w90NS in the transmission but 75w90 in the differential. This is a bit scary to me - if Porsche says use the same oil in both, that's what I'm going to do.
Similarly, FCP Euro lists LubroMoly LM2048 for both transmission and differential.
To end the story, I drained and refilled with factory fill. Felt exactly the same.
Then had the car checked over by Pacific in Walnut Creek. Shifter was aligned correctly, they said that's just the way it is with the short shifter.
That's just the way it is. Moved across the country and my local shop agrees it's normal. It's most notchy/difficult when cold. After warming up, it's not an issue.
I am due for clutch and IMS soon, I'll see if a new clutch changes anything and report back.
At least part of the notchy feeling is probably amplified by the shorter throw.

It may be the same issue with the 996 Carrera transmission.
