Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As many C4/TT owners will know, the front differential oil seals will begin to leak at some point. Mine were, of course. Their replacement is relatively straightforward (the driveshaft has to be removed). But the seals themselves cost around £25+vat each. There is nothing special about these seals that I could see, apart from the fact that their dimensions - 60 OD, 40 ID and 9 width. Generic alternatives are not available in that size. However, 60, 40, 10 seals are widely available for about £3 each e.g. http://maydayseals.co.uk/metric-oil-seal/2228-40-mm-x-60-mm-x-10-mm-oil-seal.html Do they fit? Yes. They fit perfectly and do not leak. The extra 1 mm width is irrelevant to their operation.

POST 4Original post

Great stuff! Any 'how to' written up anywhere? I fancy doing mine in the near future...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was unable to find a how to, but these are the steps: 1. Loosen 32mm hub nuts (you will need a decent sized breaker bar) 2. Detach tie rod from hub using a splitter 3. Detach lower control arm from hub using a splitter (or you could remove the bolt holding the control arm to the chassis instead) 4. Separate the driveshaft from the hub (it will slide out) 5. Give the driveshaft a sharp pull towards you and it will slide out of the differential 6. Use an oil seal remover or screwdriver to prize out the old oil seals. 7. Clean all surfaces, put a dab of oil on the outside and inside of the oil seal. Drive the oil seal in square. The rest is just refitting. It should take no more than 90 mins. Probably worth checking your oil level while you're at it.

POST 6Original post

Just stumbled across this as looking to do mine. How are those seals holding up?

POST 7Original post

Good question, mine has had a minor weep for a couple of years. My front outer cv gaiters are showing signs of age too so I'll be doing both in the next month or so. The guide in the first post doesn't mention the brake hoses, anybody know if they prevent the hub from swinging out far enough to get the driveshafts out?

POST 8Original post

I took my driveshafts out to do the CV gaiters and didn't need to remove the flexi pipes.
