Once you open a bottle of fluid, you need to use the whole thing, so you might as well push the entire thing through.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have a 73 911 , and installed a new master cylinder on my brakes and I can’t get the brake pedal to harden up. I bleed the system with suction gun twice. Any suggestions?

POST 2Original post

How much fluid did you remove and did you bench bleed the master cylinder before you installed it? There are really only two answers here: 1. There is still air in the system. The master cylinder is "way up line" from the brakes so you need to get a bunch of fluid through the system as the air is at the beginning of all of the lines. 2. You have an air leak at one of your fittings (or your bleeder system is allowing air in when you bleed). Go back and double/triple check all of your fittings. See if one of your friends has a Motive pressure bleeder and push a quart of fluid through the system. Once you open a bottle of fluid, you need to use the whole thing, so you might as well push the entire thing through.

POST 3Original post

Ok I guess I screwed up by not bleeding the master cylinder on the bench ! I will do so and let you know, thank you.

POST 4Original post

You don't actually need to bench bleed the new master, most people find it easier though. You can try to do the same thing with the master cylinder on the car. Since it is already installed, I would probably go that route if it were me. My guess is that you really do have some air still in there. Best of luck and please let us know how it turns out.
