Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Just giving options out there for 987/997 owners that don't want to shell out huge amounts for a Porsche wheel upgrade (which IMHO is still not as good).
A fellow from Canada has installed a VW steering wheel in his 986 - pictures and some info are in the thread below. He's even digital printing a Porsche Emblem for the cover.
I am very curious to know if anyone as done this using a VW DSG steering wheel and adapting the VW paddle shifters to control their Tiptronic with paddles instead of the Tip buttons?
I have seen a mod where people buy a pair of Mercedes paddles and graft them on to the steering from a 997, alter the Tip buttons wiring and end up with a modern paddle action - right paddle for shifting up, and left paddle for shifting down. But a VW wheel seems way simpler.
Have a look; I'm super interested to know if some clever person has done this....

I don't really see a benefit to paddle shifters. My wife's car has them and mine has the normal Tiptronic buttons. It seems like much ado about nothing.
For me its about getting the modern convention on the car: pull on right paddle to shift up, and left paddle to downshift. Ive had this on more modern cars, and find it more intuitive.
I f--king love this. I wonder if a MK 5 R32 manual wheel will fit...
Love this clean, button-less look
Per one of the posters on the Canada thread for this:
It's a direct bolt-on, as in the splines fit, the stock clockspring works, but you do have to make an additional oblong hole in the hub for clearance to another connector. Not difficult and doesn't require accuracy.
But the neat thing is, pretty much all VW and Audi wheels have the same hub (and the Audis already have the extra oblong hole), VW from 2005-2016, Audi from 1996-2016. There are some pretty neat wheels they make (including R8, TT flat bottom models). You just need to find one with a 2-stage airbag. They switched to single stage after 2016 I believe. And although changing the crest out is not trivial, it is doable.

My advise, don't waist your time........
Yes the spline is different from 996 to 997 and to these new VW/Audi steering wheels....
There was an adaptor from an early 90's Audi that would make the splines work, but that is only the tip of the iceberg...none of the column or covers or anything else fit and would have to be fabricated...
Unless you're just into fabricating a steering wheel and have all the skills/resources to do this without help from me or anyone, you would be much better off going to a Custom Wheel company and having one made to your specs..( ie .. there is no easy/cheap way to put these new wheels on the 996 and it look decent,.... 997 yea probably)
