I think now I have the non M030 dampers fitted I will put some H&R springs on my car.

I installed Koni Yellows and RoW M030 springs/bump stops when I did my suspension refresh last year.

The previous owner of my C4 installed the M030 ROW setup with Bilstein B8's and I am happy with the performance overall .

I replaced the 20 year old suspension on my 03 turbo.

CentreGravity in the UK is one of the best known places for doing Porsche Geo, they have machines to test dampers on the car and they said that unless leaking hardly any oem dampers are ever shot, they still work like new.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm leaving my car at stock height. Even though these shocks have less than 40K miles, they are old so I'm wondering about my options. I'm guessing my only option is to buy new OEM shocks or rebuild mine. I was told by a performance shop that there are companies that specialize in rebuilding OEM shocks. Theyy also told me that these companies can rebuld them for performance or comfort. Is this true? What are the companies that rebuild them? Are there any other options for Stock height? Thanks
I can't imagine rebuilding the shocks (if that's even doable) is better than just replacing them with Bilstein B4s (stock replacement). I just did this. I do wonder if I should have gone the sport suspension option B6.
What Ben8jam says: b4s for stock. While you are in there, doing that work, you might want to replace the springs, the sway bar drop links and the sway bar bushings. These items are a lot less than the b4s. Just did exactly that to replace the 21 year old original equipment and it was an improvement.
I replaced the 20 year old suspension on my 03 turbo. I replaced the following:
1. new factory coil springs
2. Bilstein B6 struts and shocks
3. 997 top hats for front struts, dust covers and new bump stops(less expensive than 996 top hats)
4. 996 top hats, bump stops and dust covers for rear shocks
Rides like a new car! I am happy that I went with the B6 vs the stock B4.
I kept the original springs and replaced everything else, including all hardware. I went with Koni Special Actives instead of the Bilsteins. Just did Moonshiners 28 and the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville and was very happy with it. Just one perspective.
What about active suspension for 996? I used to have Koni FSD for my Audi TT and I loved it. They were comfortable in casual driving conditions, but sporty when I drove more aggressively. Anything like that for 996s?
I'd add the bump stops and give these priority over the springs as springs don't wear/lose stiffness. If anything they break when corrosion has progressed far enough after the powder coating has failed.
Would go for new B4 and not have the stock shock absorbers rebuilt if staying stock. Having the choice I'd go for Koni active
Oh, yes, hardtailer is right. I replaced everything from the top mounts down including the bump stops and bellows. The spring on the driver side was a little bit shorter due to plus sized first owner. It now measures identical each side from inside center fender to center of wheel. Handling and ride are noticeably better.
nothingexcept theyre a little lower than US ride heightwhich the owner isnt interested in lowering, so I dunno why it was even mentioned by a few people
It was an option from Porsche so they were designed by the engineers for the car . Is that special ? That's for the consumer to decide . The previous owner of my C4 installed the M030 ROW setup with Bilstein B8's and I am happy with the performance overall .
I installed Koni Yellows and RoW M030 springs/bump stops when I did my suspension refresh last year. Great road setup and as someone else mentioned it is a Porsche OEM setup.
Koni is a good option, but they don't make them fro the AWD cars.
I would be very careful about swapping at 40k miles. I swapped all mine, 2001 C4 coupe, last year and all my dampers were fine, and my car has done 135k miles.
I had M030 dampers from the factory, and we have springs that are lower than your M030 option. I went with the Bilstein M030 B4 replacements along with new hardware, kept the original springs.
Bilstein said that their damper was 15% firmer roughly than the one they supply Porsche with, the B6 is roughly 15% firmer again (albeit with better rebound etc.).
To be honest I was disappointed, almost like the front end was softer than before and the back end far firmer. So much so I actually tracked down a pair of rear oem dampers that had come off a car at 50k miles. So now running Bilstein M030 B4 fronts with M030 ROW oem springs and standard oem dampers with M030 springs.
This is far far better for the road, the back end no longer skips about on anything but pool table smooth roads, and it has turned it into a fairly comfy car too.
If I were in your position I think I would buy new bump stops and top mounts* and some H&R springs while keeping your dampers. If when you take them out they are not returning properly, then order some
non
M030 Bilstein B4 dampers. But I reckon your dampers will be OK. CentreGravity in the UK is one of the best known places for doing Porsche Geo, they have machines to test dampers on the car and they said that unless leaking hardly any oem dampers are ever shot, they still work like new. I couldn't believe that after 20 years and 130k miles that would be the case, so bought new ones. They were right. Haha
Remember, dampers make far more difference to how firm the car rides than springs.
I think now I have the non M030 dampers fitted I will put some H&R springs on my car. Just waiting for some CV joints to come back into stock so I can convert my car to RWD, so will do the springs at the same time.
I also did all my control arms at the same time, the bushes were OK, but the rubber was rock hard from ageing. So consider those too.
*Do not use 997 front top mounts on the AWD cars, you will not get more than 0.5 of negative camber. They look the same, but the angle is slightly different meaning you can't get a nice negative camber up front.
You have all been offering good info. Thank you. There has been several replies like this, that help me to know what else to replace while it is in the air. I think I will go go with a B4 set up. I don't need a racing suspension so I'm looking for comfort. Has anyone ever seen a "Progressive Spring"? Plush at the top but tightens up as the spring compresses?
