Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
I looked at what I thought was the main horn, next to the battery housing, but this turned out to be the alarm horn.
Leading evidence: 'alarm horn' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'alarm horn' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check done' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

the high tone horn always stop working because of water ingress and is easy to change without taking the front pu off

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.
911uk: 1 discussions
0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 1 adjusted by outcome qualification.
1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Mine did the same & they said it was broken, so fixed it.
Why does the 996 have such a wimpy hooter ?
Driving to work today I felt the need to let someone know I was there and used the hooter and every time I do I'm a little embarrassed as it sounds more like it should be on a Fiat Seicento (possibly and Orange one  )
And no comments that it is the right hooter for a Cab!!!!!

Scotty, are you sure it's not broken, believe it is a known weak point on 996's. I've read of quite a few needing fixing.

Scott,
Get it checked. The horn has two "notes" and it is very common for one of them to stop working, then it sounds just like a Noddy car. Quite a common warranty fix. Mine failed its last 111 point on it.
There is also a trick to the repair I am told. If they fit the new horn upside down it is much less likely to happen again. Apparently stops water from pressure washers/driving in the rain from getting into teh horn, which is what kills them.

Ah, will get it looked at when i take it in for its service and first MoT in May.....i think i can live wtih it being wimpy until then......

Exact same thing found with mine when she was serviced and 111 pc at the start of the month. Think it cost £30 to replace.

Hi Sid the Spanner,
Where i sthe horn located on a 996?
Mine is really wimpy too so I guess the high tone is kaput. I looked at what I thought was the main horn, next to the battery housing, but this turned out to be the alarm horn.
Many thanks, Billy2Rivers

Airhorns are what you need...
Ferrari used to fit their cars pre 1999 with a fantastic set of airhorns that sounded so cool and were very loud. I think noise regs outlawed them on new cars post 1999.
