Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
No changes have been made to the Porsche recommended oil, as they've always recommended Mobil-1.
Leading evidence: 'Recommend mobil-1' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend mobil-1' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I believe it changed around 2004 when you could extend the intervals to more than 12 months ?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Can somone tell me what the service schedule is on a facelift 996 ? And when the minor/major fits in.
I believe it changed around 2004 when you could extend the intervals to more than 12 months ? Did this involve using different oil (as per Audi VW etc).
Reason for asking is that a (2003) car I'm interested in has done only 15k miles and was last serviced by an OPC at 9k 17 months ago. The only service before that was at 3k 17 months before that (so biggish gaps).
Am I paranoid ?

Should be 12,000 or 12 months whichever is the sooner I believe.
There is a "lite" annual service for low mileage cars but there should be one every year (minor/lite or major) as I understand it.
When in 2003 was it registered, when are the service dates ?

Not sure about later revisons but 98-01 as below..
Major service every 24,000
Minor 12,000
Annual (for low mileage)
Spark plugs every 48,000 (also suspect they will suggest coils as well)
Brake fluid change every 2 years.
As always this does not preclude regular fluids (oil/coolant) checks)
However no minimum service interval is advertised as 20,000..

I have a 2004 996 and have been told it is every 12,000 miles or 24 months whichever is sooner.....in fact when I tried to have it serviced on 12 months they told me it was unnecessary!

Thanks Rob/Scott
Anyone have a 2003 996 who can look in their service book and see what it says...
Dealer who is selling the car has put their own stamp in the book which devalues it for me. Looks like car now sold, so someone was prepared to take the risk.

The service intervals are shown on the Porsche website, basically they are:
Minor service
Every 12,000 miles or 1 year (up to and including Model Year 2003)
Every 12,000 miles or 2 years (from Model Year 2004)
Major service
Every 24,000 miles or 2 years (up to and including Model Year 2003)
Every 24,000 miles or 4 years (from Model Year 2004)
Annual service
Cars driven less than 9,000 miles per year (up to and including Model Year 2003)
Replace spark plugs
Every 48,000 miles, but no later than every 4 years
Every 24,000 miles (up to Model year 1999), 36,000 miles (Model Year 2000), 48,000 miles (Model Year 2001)
No changes have been made to the Porsche recommended oil, as they've always recommended Mobil-1.

Mark, I was told by the OPC that 04 onwards was 2 years but only 12,000 miles.......which means mine is due soon (due to mileage), so not sure what is right ?
Migration info. Legacy thread was 118535
I thought it was 12K miles or 2 years on the 996. And this has gone up to 20K (or something like that) miles on the 997.
One of the reasons why the 997s are cheaper to run.

If you read my post, these are the correct service schedules! I didn't make them up, pure plagiarism from the Porsche website.
Yes, the 997 does have a 20k interval.
Migration info. Legacy thread was 118569
Hmmmm......driving one of these properly, would you really leave it 2 yrs without a service irrespective of what the service interval was supposed to be??

So the early 997's had the same engine as the late 997 I think. At what point did the engine need half as much maintenance?
I'll still do mine annually but I'm curious how one year the engine can change so much.
