Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've tried to run OBD2 diagnostics but don't have Porsche specific software and no codes are showing.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there,
New to the forum, hopefully I'm posting in the right place.
I've just picked up a 996 Carrera 4 2003 that won't start. The previous owner stated that he started the car, drove a few hundred meters then felt abnormal vibration and the engine shut down.
So far I've turned the engine over by hand (socket) and it turned over with no abnormal noises or grinding (have read a lot about the IMS bearing). Tried to crank the engine myself to confirm it won't start - no luck.
I started with the basics, fuel. I can't hear the fuel pump when I turn on the ignition, reading other forums it seems I should be able to so I've taken out the relay and hot wired the terminals, I then hear the pump so I tried to start it with the pump hotwired - no luck. The relay seems to work when I run 12v across it so not sure why the pump isn't coming on with ignition and even so seems like it's not my main issue if hot-wiring the terminals doesn't work?
I've tried to run OBD2 diagnostics but don't have Porsche specific software and no codes are showing.
Any thoughts are much appreciated!
Could be the CPS (crank position sensor not sending a signal. This happened to my car once. If there is no signal from the CPS the fuel pump won't run.
^^^this.
Does your scan tool show engine RPM while cranking with the starter?
If yes, the crank position sensor is OK.
If no, the cps or wiring is bad.
Thanks for the quick responses, sorry I forgot to mention that I'd read about the CPS before. I can see a rise in RPM in my scanner so I'm assuming from that the CPS is good.
