It is a lot easier and efficient to vacuum fill your car because the vacuum sucks all the air out for you in a single pass.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good morning all. I recently purchased a 2000 C2 Cabriolet, my first Porsche. It came with an extensive service history at my local Porsche dealership. This included a new coolant expansion tank and new cap about 4,000 miles ago. When I purchased the car the coolant level was at the min line. I added coolant and about a week and a half later, the coolant level shows back at the min line. There are no observable leaks and the engine oil appears free of coolant. When the car is at operating temperature the coolant is back near the max line. The bleeder valve also operates correctly. Ive poured through the forums about this issue. My question is: is this normal operation for the expansion tank? To show min when cold and max when hot? Thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

No, not normal operation. You probably have some air in the coolant system. Read up on how to bleed air out of the system. Or, manually open the bleed valve and drive several heating and cooling cycles.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you, I'll try the bleeding methods mentioned on here.

POST 4Original post

Or the resi tank is cracked but only leaking under pressure. This is a common issue.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully it's something minor, thanks.

POST 6Original post

DBJoe996 is right. Not normal. Now that you have a new hobby: repairing/restoring a 23 year old Porsche, buy these two tools, which you will find plenty of use for: an air compressor and a vacuum fill tool for your antifreeze. It is a lot easier and efficient to vacuum fill your car because the vacuum sucks all the air out for you in a single pass. The tool is powered by compressed air and you will need it again when you, inevitably, replace the water pump or any of the 16 coolant hoses around the engine. The air compressor will also power your air wrench for removing wheel or engine bolts. And since you have a cab, buy one of these: 996 561 787 01 now. It's an easily broken cover for the latch that pulls the top tight. If it breaks off (and it will) you won't be able to close the top. It's $20. Cheap by Porsche standards!

He has a point. Does it go lower and lower or does it always come back up to max at operating temperature without adding more coolant in between?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18778013

Always goes to max at operating temp without adding coolant.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18777082

Thank you, will do. This certainly is a helluva hobby to get into.

POST 10Original post

This is how my car has operated since I got it in 2014 Min when cold, Max when hot. Seems like it always finds its own level regardless of how high I fill the tank. Once its at the cold min level, it stays there

POST 11Original post

If its not loosing coolant the the system is operating correctly. It has around 5 gal of coolant. It will expand and contract with temps.

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18778186

Thats where my car seems to be. Seems like some cars run that way and others dont. I havent had any temperature issues YET so well see.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18778217

That gives me some reassurance, thank you.

POST 14Original post

Similar here, mine if you fill it more than about 5mm above min will relieve a tiny amount of coolant till its happy, usually about 4 oz.. I have the extra front radiator and mine holds a tick over 6 gallons when I filled it from dry.
