Can you run an extension lead to the garage and use that as a power source.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I've recently bought a 2002 Carrera 2. I pick it up next week. It's my first porsche so pretty excited. I bought the car based on condition and history rather than colour and cosmetics so the colour (lapis blue / grey interior) is I'm sure not to everyone's taste but I like it a lot. The only problem is I was hoping to get PSM on my car for that bit of extra safety on the roads and also I am keen to do Nurburgring trips this year. This track can be lethal in less than perfect conditions so I'd like a bit of insurance in the form of some traction control. My car does not have PSM fitted as standard. I am expecting retro-fitting this would be prohibitivly expensive so I am considering a racelogic system. http://www.racelogic.co.uk/ Does anyone have any experience of these systems? The sales people wanted to know if the car has missfire detection systems that could cause a problem with the ECU. As the system basicly works by cutting the fuel injection this can cause problems with some ECUs. The system has been successfully fitted on a GT2 but it was an earlier model I believe. Secondly I am reading about battery life being a problem. My garage does not have power so I am considering removing the battery from the car and putting on a conditioner. Is there a method for doing this that does not cause problems with immobilisers/ radio codes etc. Many thanks. Migration info. Legacy thread was 114801

POST 2Original post

Hi Rawhide. Congratulations on your car. I hope (in fact I'm sure) you'll love it. I'm afraid I can't help with your PSM questions, but my garage doesn't have power either and I've left the car for 6 weeks and it's started 1st time. I know lots of other people on the forum have had battery issues so if you do a search for "battery" you'll find a biillion threads on the issues surrounding the problems. I suggest you wait before taking the battery out to see whether you have a problem. If you do hopefully you'll find answers and good advice on here. Matt Migration info. Legacy thread was 114817

POST 3Original post

Rawhide - congrats on the new car you will love it. On the PSM front - it is a really good system (safteynet) but quite a few 911s don't have it. In fact mine doesn't and I have done many laps at the ring, including a few in the pouring rain (which were really fun! ). Not having it, means that you have to drive differently, start slowly and build up pace that way. Rather than the bull at a gate technique. I would drive the car a bit and even do a track day before you rush to spend money on an aftermarket system. You will be amazed how much traction these cars have. If you take the battery out you may haver problems with any tracker that is fitted to the car. Can you run an extension lead to the garage and use that as a power source. Alkternatively I would be tempted to have two batteries, one in the car and one on charge. That way you can just swap them regularly and not incur the problems of having no battery in the car.If you use the car everyday, then you won't have any problems with the battery anyway. Hope that helps - and keep firing the questions! Migration info. Legacy thread was 114827

POST 4Original post

Hi rawhide - got the racelogic on my GT3 courtesy of the PO. Not properly challenged it but was trying to provoke the car a little in slippy conditions and felt the TC cutting in - it is very subtle though. The PO assured me that it was very worthwhile for thru the winter and is completely removeable. Downsides are that it is very fussy about tyre pressure as this is part of its calculations on slip. If you're a little out with these you'll feel accceleration 'kick' a little - almost like a missfire. Apart form that you wouldn't know its been there! Costs about £1k. Its probably worth it from what i've been told but i'll know once i've had it on track how much it can do. I know that its popular with the TVR boys, for obvious reasons! Migration info. POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Dunc good to hear you have it fitted. WHat year is your car? Do you know who fitted it? Also are there any other active porsche discussion forums? Migration info. Legacy thread was 114840

POST 6Original post

I can prob find out who did the installation if you like, will try and dig out the paperwork. My car is a 2000 but that's pretty irrelevant as the system will work on any Porsche without existing TC. It gives you a trick looking little control box for setting up the sensitivity from 0% full wet to 100% off (slip angles). Guys at work were asking if it was telemetry for track days! There's loads of P forums, this one is prob the most chilled and friendly. PH is good for technical enquiries as it has a larger number of porsche members. Migration info. Legacy thread was 114847

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Dunc. I have some good info from Racelogic so it looks positive. It might help if you could let me know who did the install so if there's any problems the fitters can help. Migration info. Legacy thread was 114932

POST 8Original post

It would appear that the PO of my car fitted the racelogic system himself. From what i can gather its a very straight forward system and is surprisingly effective as a traction control system. It does not intervene to the same levels as PSM as it wont apply braking, therefore the old favourite lift off oversteer will be outwith its control. For more straightforward grip loss back end break under power away it's more efficient. Migration info. Legacy thread was 114970
