And check with your insurance folks mine considerd it when vehichle classification of premiums were discussed.

Hello all. I am picking up my 2009
Carrera
S cab this week. Unfortuatly one of the options the car does not have is the self dimming mirror option. Is this really as big of a deal as people make it out to be? All my recent cars have had them so I dont know what it's like without them. Being that the car rides very low, it could be a pain. Also, does anyone know if they can be added after the fact?
You'll find that most SUVs shoot their lights straight into your back window and all three mirrors. You can, of course, manually dim the center mirror, but you'll get a lot of light beams into the side mirrors. Unfortunately, each

is manufactured with a custom wiring harness, unique to your car's options, so adding this option is very hard, if not impossible.

That's hard to answer, since it's in the "eye" of the beholder, [so to speak]. I've seen many posts on the boards where people don't have a problem without the option, and for others it bothers them a lot. I would suggest you talk to the dealer and see if they have a loaner you can drive for a night or two and see for yourself. If it means the difference between a sale or not, the dealer might be amenable to your request.

To add to what beez said, do you do a lot of night driving, do you drive in the city, do you dislike bright lights in your mirrors? It is a bit subjective but just as one opinion I'd think long and hard about not having this option depending on the answers to the questions above.
I do live in Los Angeles, so yes all my driving is in the city. I don't do a lot of driving at night, but I do drive at night. All have my cars have had this option so I have never really given it any thought. I just dont want to get the car and have it become an issue where I don't want to drive at night because of this.
FWIW, I chose to order my CS without dimming mirrors. Most of my driving is urban, day and night. I have not found mirror glare, even from SUVs and other trucks, to be a problem and have dimmed my inside mirror perhaps 2-3 times in about 3 years of driving.
I know many swear by self-dimming mirrors, but I just don't like them. For me they are less than unnecessary, they are unwanted. YMMV.
Self-dimming mirrors are a solution to a problem I don't have. I prefer keep my outside mirrors positioned so that headlights don't shine in my eyes. This requires that I move my head a little to check the road behind me, but I usually glance over my shoulder to check my blindspot anyway. As for the inside mirror, I just flip the manual dim lever a night. So, I don't have any issues with the standard mirrors.
Bottom line... depending on your driving habits... they can be beneficial... or not.
The soccer moms and the ******** in the SUV's and monster trucks make it a must for me. It does merrit more than a general upgraded option of being driver friendly it is a lot safer. And check with your insurance folks mine considerd it when vehichle classification of premiums were discussed. It more than pays for itself by not being manual but ease of driving when incliment weather is afoot or twilight driving and on and on!
Unfortunately only you can answer this question. I've never had the option on any car I've owned. If there is a lot of glare from a big truck/SUV, I flip the manual anti-dim. Sometimes I just change lanes if it's an interstate. Is this a car you ordered but forgot to add the option or just a car on the lot? If it's an ordered car you may want to discuss this w/ the dealer.
Also, take into account if you are going to tint your windows or not.
I have the manual dimming mirror and have never flipped it. Granted my tint is rather dark.
My side mirrors are pointed all the way out so cars directly behind me don't bother me. If there is a car in another lane behind me, I just raise the side window half way and it blocks the glare.
I always opt for manual mirrors as I feel the auto versions never give me a clear picture of headlights at night, making it harder to pick out the caprices and crown victorias.
