Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

that depends on cranking could drop to as low as 10volts.best thing to do no diy messing about get the battery bench charged off the car then if it takes the charge ,hydrometer to check the cells ,load test the battery if all is fine check the alternator charging rate 12.8-14volts max and then finally a current drain check and the draw should be no more than 0.06 amps

but below 12v isnt good as shouldnt the battery warning light come on below that stage when you eventually fire up the car, but will check unless someone can, I'll email sid the mechanic to advise if he can !

I might need to replace my warrantied battery, worth a shot anyway!!!!
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It is on charge at the moment to get it back to normal.
Following on from my 'poor cranking' post, and the number of 'failed to start' posts over the internet forums at the moment. Does anyone know what the correct battery voltage at ignition position 1 (i.e. not started)? I'm showing 11-11.5v which possible means I might have a battery cell on its way out, considering all batteries nowadays aren't necessarily 12v, closer to 13.8v.

all 12v car batteries are 12v .if your battery is 13.8v without the engine running you have got some big problems

I just bought a brand spanking new battery for my motorhome, and when I connected it up (before starting the engine) my very accurate battery condition meter showed 13.4 v (and 14.4 v for my fully charged leisure battery).
So I'm not so sure the precisely 12v theory is correct? :?

ok, just adid a quick test. Did not have time to get a meter out so relying on the cars.
Keys in and turn on, meter reads about 11.8 volts
Turn key (engine cranks) drops to 10.2 volts
Engine running shows 14.1
obviously there are no 0.1 dividers and I am assuming that teh scale is linear. Hope this helps.

Mine had started to drop a bit lately, but then I haven't been using it that much. It is on charge at the moment to get it back to normal.

About 5 mins after I drove away with the lights on it dropped back to a tad over 12v which is what I would expect. When I arrived at my destination (not many miles from So Poo) after switching of I turned the key back on and it was almost perfectly settled on the 12v line.

A nominal 12V battery should read more than 12V when charged.
I can't remember if it is supposed to be 12.8 or 13.8V.
When I turn the ignition on in my car it always shows over 13V on the guage. But the guages in the car are only an indication.
Once you start the car, depending on the weather it will sometimes drop down to around 10 after starting. The windcreen wipers will go slowly. After about 10-30 secs the volts will come back up again.
The alternator has some sort of clutch arrangement I think, so that it can be switched out. You can hear when it switches in.
I have had the same behaviour on 2 cars, although no-one else ever seems to have noticed it.
Anyway, the point being that once started, wait for a minute to check what the guage says.
