Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

i have a quick question. If i vinyl my top flat black can the vinyl damage the paint under it? And what is the life expectancy on a vinyl top?

POST 2Original post

I don't know exactly where you're going with this but I wanted to cover my Boxster S hardtop with convertible material for the look of a convertible but solidness and security of the hardtop. I decided not to do it because it was too expensive. What I ended up doing was painting the top with Bumper Black paint. It worked rather well and was the look I wanted. What about a vinyl wrap for you. I don't know from experience but I'm pretty sure you can do and remove the wrap a number of times. There was a post recently about wrapping a whole car. There would info there.

Life expectancy varies depending on where you live, type of vinyl, color, and how often you wash the car. Unfortunately, in California, we have lots of fallout in the air. It is important to keep it clean. A bottle of detail spray will work wonders. I have seen peoples wraps fade in a year, and others last 4 years before starting to fade. for colors, matte finish obviously doesn't last as long as a gloss finish. Think of it as clear coat.... I sell 3M high performance cast wrap films, and you can realistically expect about 3 years before it begins to fade, longer if the car is garaged, and you keep it clean. The vinyl does not damage the paint, it actually preserves the paint, protecting it from the elements. When removing and old wrap, simply apply heat with a clothes steamer (50 bucks at costco) to make the vinyl soft again and come up easily without pulling on the paint or leaving any glue behind.
