I swapped the blue interior on my 2000 for the black/grey interior from a 996 tt, including the dash and all trim.

Again I'm just thinking out loud right now but this winter when I do my motor swap I will have a stand along engine harness and I was thinking it might not be a bad idea to do a new body harness so I don't have to try and get everything to talk to each other vs just running new wires and hooking up my own switches and gauges with a dash swap.

Unless you are changing out all the modules in your car, I don't see using the cluster and HVAC that come with the 997 dash would work.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Dash and door panels to be specific. Maybe another Porsche interior, custom or from another brand of car.
I've seen some pretty neat swaps done on the fiero forum I'm on and got me thinking
lol

I've had most of the interior out of my 996s for one reason or another and it's not very hard, especially if you have a set of those plastic tools for getting leverage to pop the plastic fasteners that hold everything down.
However, dashboards tend to be a huge pain in the ****. I haven't removed one from a 996, but every other car I've ever had to remove one from made me never want to do it again.
our interiors don't bother me but they are very basic (not a bad thing) and I've been toying with the idea of swapping out to a different interior.
I've pulled a couple out in chevy's and ya... they have always been a knuckle buster. I'm not the most electrically inclined which is my biggest hesitation. The fab work doesn't scare me though. At Cars and Coffee this past weekend I was looking at some of the newer GT3 interiors and ... wow. I have a Lamborghini diablo Dash(fiberglass) and the center console is similar to the GT3.. kinda lol
Anyway just thinking out loud.
ya I would think so. but getting the 997 dash to talk to the 996 stuff... that's where I'm lost as that is just not my forte.

looking for idea for this.. nothing just nothing out there so far for people getting to crazy with there interiors that I can find. Now I'm down to within a couple months of tearing into my car so I'm trying to get my ducks in a row before I start.
I agree. I have done this in other cars. We needed to build a module that translated the CANbus signals from the cluster to something the ECU would understand. The guy that was building the module had to interpret EVERY signal and figure out what the signal was supposed to do and then build a module to interpret them for the ECU. A huge task. Unless you are changing out all the modules in your car, I don't see using the cluster and HVAC that come with the 997 dash would work.
I think the two dashes are similar enough in the right places that you could retrofit your factory stuff (gauges and climate controls) into the dash with a little bit of custom work.
It doesn't look that hard, it was pretty common in the E46 M3 world, you would see a lot of people swap to a rarer color if a set was available. I've considered switching from beige to black in mine but if I ever go to sell it I know I would be too lazy to swap it back and don't want to hurt the value.
While we're on the topic of interior swaps, does anyone know if a 997 center console would be a relatively straightforward swap into a 996? It seems like it might be, with the exception of what to do with the area in front of the shifter where it would meet the factory dash.
I rescued a convertable from dealership storage, interior was totally roached. Replaced everything but the dash( redyed it) , hardest thing was waiting for the appropiate colored pieces to pop up here or on ebay.
Im thinking this would look nice. I would have to make my own door panels though.
If possible i could work in the 997 console as well.
I need to open my own body shop lol
It's one thing to just swap colors in same MY cars, but to get into different years OH BOY probably a huge can of worms...
You'd have to absolutely LOVE "YOUR" car, or be VERY handy and have a HUGE amount of time ....and Patience
I have a tripe Black 03 Cab, Black seats in FL are not ideal, Iv'e thought about swapping with a Tan, but my seats, full power Heated Leather are a 10,
who'd have the same condition and want to change?
I cut the fenders out of my Porsche.... I eat worms lol "love" my car, na its just a toy and huge amounts of time.. ya maybe. I'm not sure how long this one would take. the wide body, paint job and all the other stuff I did took me 5 months. I'm hoping (if I do it) that this interior redo would only take a couple over the winter since its such an isolated area vs what I did for the first build which was the whole car for the most part.
I'll see how motivated I am once I get the motor out and start the engine swap if I want to tackle the interior. I think it would definitely be unique and I searched a lot yesterday and I cant find any car out there with another interior(not Porsche) in it.
custom body, swapped out more hp motor and a diablo interior....one of a kind
lol
Bart, tell us more about this. You seem to specialize in air cooled Porsches. Didnt find anything on your website for the 996 interior. What will you have for the 996?
@BartCB
hope you respond. You will have huge interest for a 996 interior. As you already know, other than swapping plastic for leather interiors from ebay, a turnkey solution of similar look and quality to your piccture is not yet on the market. One is needed. Not to mention the number of 996s produced dwarfs the number of air cooled models which makes it an attractive business opportunity. I for one am very interested.
