I recently removed liners, cleaned, rust-proofed the rear wells and yours looks no different to mine (except the fatter rear, that is).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Team I have recently picked up a nice 911 C4S in Speed Yellow and looking to restore it to its former glory, one thing is puzzling me slightly, there doesn't seem to be any protection for the exhaust back boxes from the rear wheels, I was wondering if there had been a piece of the rear heat shield missing on both sides? I can see the coil pack protection cover and back mufflers, am I missing something? I have attached a picture, any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mike

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks buddy, probably explains why the back boxes are so corroded on the car, think ill make up a vented protection plate, Cheers Mike

POST 4Original post

Hi mike glad you bought a great car. Mine are the same but my mufflers have been upgraded with dansk s/steel

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey thanks for that, will look at getting them upgraded to S/S as a matter of course, I have the sports option on my 911, will that make a difference to the type of back box I choose? Cheers Mike

POST 6Original post

I'll be honest I'm not to sure I wouldn't of thought so but Richard will be along soon when he see s your post he's a man who can

POST 7Original post

Hi Mike. Welcome to 996 ownership, there are not many C4s around in speed yellow it's a great colour. As others have said it's as it should be. I hope is just a tidy up and not in need of restoration! have fun and enjoy.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yep it's a love or hate colour, wanted it as soon as I seen it, the car is in great condition and just needs a small amount of tlc to make bang on, have just got the wheels re-coated in Matt black and the callipers done professionaly in speed yellow cw painted Porsche decal, so it's taking time but enjoying the whole process, Thanks again guys Mike

POST 9Original post

Looks like the rearmost arch liner is missing?.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ah Chris, your the first to notice this, wish I had something to compare it too, even the drawings of the liners at Porsche are hard to tell. Cheers Mike

POST 12Original post

I recently removed liners, cleaned, rust-proofed the rear wells and yours looks no different to mine (except the fatter rear, that is). I suggest you remove the front liners in these wells whilst you're there, because you will find a moist pad of dirt just waiting to rot sill box section. Sports exhaust as in switchable? Then you will need to delete that option or replace with OEM. I believe these are more expensive than many aftermarket options. Speed yellow is a great colour though

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Chris, it still is a bit unclear, was gonna get a look on Utube to see if anyone is posting a task ie shocker change to get a look at another inner arch before ordering anything, Cheers again Mike

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tony Thanks for the valued advice, will do exactly that, the rear boxes are just heavily corroded round the edging seams, will actually look at what I can do to improve the look of them, Cheers again, Mike

POST 15Original post

Yes it does Chris, but that's how they are. Item 9 in your diagram link is the rear arch liner fitted in front of the rear wheel. your Cayman may differ.

POST 16Original post

Looks normal to me too. The original silencers are stainless steel, but they go crusty at the seams, where the welding reduces the stainless properties. You say they are 'sports' exhausts. Do you mean the IXLF option switchable Porsche Sports Exhaust system? If so, I would try to tidy them up and preserve them, as it is a worthwhile and desireable option. If they are not, then you can't go far wrong with the Dansk Sport Mufflers. (The Super Sports are a bit loud and intrusive, I'm told).

POST 17Original post

Just looks like something is missing!. Every day is (still) a school day.....

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Richard Thanks for clearing it up for me, the system is the IXLF option and the boxes are exactly like you said, will have them re-crimped and welded, not to mention detailing the inner arches, thanks again Mike

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Chris Thats exactly what I thought, it's all a bit wide open down there but I guess these cars have been getting made for such a long time that they are almost perfect lol cheers again Mike

POST 20Original post

I have to admit I thought something was missing on mine when I first bought it. I would be careful, if you decided to fabricate your own liner. There could be good reasons why Porsche left it that way.

POST 21Original post

Hi guys, I noticed the exact same thing on the rear arches of my mates 996 C2. When we did some research we found an article stating that no further liners were added as engineers designed it this way as heat from the silencers would warm the tires and provide necessary grip at the rear. I really don't know if this is true or a retrospective justification, but sounds plausible enough. In any way it looks exactly the same as my mate's C2 so wouldn't worry. Enjoy the car. Sounds like a nice spec. John.

POST 22Original post

I think it would be slightly unreal that all would be missing ?

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This all seems to be sparking off a little debate, it would be fantastic if someone out there with a 996 C4s could send in a snap of their rear inner arch, any takers? Cheers Mike

POST 24Original post

I'll post a pic of mine tomorrow BUT as I said earlier it will have different mufflers on it seeing as mine are dansk one. Richard has already said its looks normal ?

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Thanks for the picture, that about clears it up for me, no more wild goose chases, will just leave things as they are meant to be, Cheers Buddy, Mike
