The "shims" are probably a reference to the "compensation plates", an issue of much confusion.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am fitting my M030 kit. There are no kits for the pre 2001 car available and have been told by a few people in the know that the difference to the '02 car is negligible so that is what I have. I have to fit compensating plates and these vary depending on the spring colours, but I can't find a reference which explains which one I need, can anybody help? Front springs are green and white at the bottom and orange at the top Rear springs are green and white at the bottom and blue at the top Thanks for any pointers!! MC

POST 2Original post

This might help, from 996 Essential Companion while it's not entirely clear, I'd say going with the lower of the two is pretty safe [/url]http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu97/Fracture725/IMG_0546_zpsxfdumgek.jpg

POST 3Original post

What are these compensating plates that you speak of? Didn't require them when I fitted my later M030 kit to my 996.1, Sits and rides fine.

POST 4Original post

I have just today split the springs from my 996 C2 Mo30 dampers ..... I have found them to be as described in the photo posted by Fracture: ie Spring lowest coil has a 1x green and 1x white daub of paint, while the upmost coil has a single daub of white paint. The floppy rubber compensation disc is 3mm thick. I imagine this will not especially help you with your "orange and blue" daubs of paint, but one thing I noticed when taking the strut apart, was that the spring needed very little compression before it became loose. ie there was little preload. The thicker compensation disc, will give more preload on the spring, but if the springs is the same rating (Green and white) then the ride height should be the same, regardless of preload. (Think that is right anyway???)

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, but still no help. Everywhere just seems to list both. I have asked my OPC for guidance, I will report back. MC

Have read here:- http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/6029-suspension-compensation-plates/

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I read that one. A fair few people seem to have the question, but no difinitive answers. I might try Carnewal or CG if the OPC can't help. MC

POST 10Original post

Found this on Rennlist which might help, I didn't fit them, should I be worried? The "shims" are probably a reference to the "compensation plates", an issue of much confusion. Lots of info here and at RennTech on that. But basically springs come with a green stripe or a white stripe. Green stripe uses 1 thickness of compensation plate, white uses another. The M030 kit doesn't come with the compensation plates, surprisingly. So this is what you do..... -Know which part # plates go with which color stripe on the spring. -Have the seller open the M030 box that they're going to send you. Not any ol' box, your box. Have them look at the compensation marking (the stripe) on the springs, front and rear. They won't necessarily be the same. -Have the seller sell you the correct compensation plates. Note that you may have to hold the seller's hands on this. I bought my M030 kit from a very well reputed shop that is mentioned here at Rennlist all the time. To my surprise, they didn't know much about the plates. These plates go on the shock mount, not the spring. I've read some posts from some far more experienced Rennlisters then I on how the compensation plates impact ride height. But I have to admit that I still really don't understand it. The compensation plates go on the shock mount, not the spring. And it seems to me that the springs set ride height, not the shock. Putting a rubber spacer on the shock, in my perception, would only move the "band" of shock travel length. The reason for the compensation plates is that the M030 springs come in two different lengths. Green length and White length. Note that there are 3 colored stripes on the M030 springs. A green and white (as I recall) stripe that identify the spring as M030 (or at least I think that's the purpose of the double stripe), and then the compensation marking. The compensation marking is a couple inches away from the double stripe.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I honestly don't know whether you should be worried or not. Still plenty of references to having to fit the correct plates, but no information on which plates are correct. I bet that Chris at CG will know, I'll give him a call later. MC

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After drawing a blank from the OPC I turned to the experts for help I spoke with Pete from CG who told me to go with what is already on the car. If I am changing them for any reason then fit the smaller of the two available sizes at the front to make sure that it has a nose down stance. So that was easy in the end, just refit what I have MC

POST 14Original post

Excellent news, you had me worried for a while there!

POST 15Original post

sorry to necro this thread, but I'm doing something else I'm replacing my Ohlin R&T kit with Billstein B12 and i'm in the process of buying new strut parts - so my car does not currently have the compensation plates... which ones do I go with?!
