I can easily replace the pump for much cheaper (Ive already disassembled and greased the bearings prior to taking it in) My gut feeling is that replacing the pump wont solve the problem as it still blows air.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I got a CEL light the other day and after a quick diagnosis determined there was something wrong with the SAI system. So off to my LN Engineering certified indy. After running their diagnostic procedure, shot me this message, SAI Motor Is Excessively Noisy When Tested With Diagnostic Tool And Needs To Be Replaced Before Performing Any Other Tests. So I know that its blowing air, it blew when I took it in, and its blowing air now. I assume that it blew when they tested it. Is this a red flag from the shop? Are they trying to extract another $1200 from me? I can easily replace the pump for much cheaper (Ive already disassembled and greased the bearings prior to taking it in) My gut feeling is that replacing the pump wont solve the problem as it still blows air. So onto my question: assuming the pump is on the way out, and assuming the rate of flow is reduced, could that throw a code? It certainly blows a lot of air, so I doubt its reduced any measurable amount, but Id like to pose the question to you fine folks.

POST 2Original post

There is also a change over valve in the system and that should be checked first. Im not really sure if flow rate is checked as part of the system. I cant see how it could be as there is no sensor for it?

POST 3Original post

Unless one writes the firmware for Porsche emission testing, it is not possible to answer this question about flow rate. It conceivably can be tested by seeing how much oxygen is detected by the O2 sensor when the SAI pump is on. But that also depends on the performance of the o2 sensor. It is probably safe to surmise that the air pump is tested for On/Off status versus how much air flow is pumped into the exhaust. As to your comment of them wanting to stick you with a $1200 bill, that is not warranted. You took the car in for a diagnosis with an SAI error code. They found a bad/loud pump and any conscientious mechanic should mention it and make it part of the solution. Until there is for sure reliable air source, how could they tell if the diverter valve is open or not? If you truly believe that they don't derserve that work, and it sounds like you are also capable, pay them for the diagnosis and fix it yourself.

While I agree that many shops/mechanics are simply sales generators, you have to acknowledge - it is their business after all. I think Yellowcabs suggestion of paying for the diagnosis and fixing it yourself is right on the money.

I have the pump on order and will replace it before taking the car back. While I don't believe it will fix the problem, it may be on its way out, if anything.

POST 6Original post

SAI pumps are notorious on pretty much all the German marques,, and age is more important than mileage as the usual issue is a failing bearing or just a dry bearing on one end of the shaft.
