Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently replaced starter, alternator, cable and battery. The car was very slow to start. It now starts perfectly and voltage shows 13.5. But after an hour of driving the it starts to dip toward 12v and looks like it wants to go lower but stays just at 12v. Prior to replacing the parts it would go to 11v or lower which was concerning. So my question is, do I need to worry about this and some kind of current drain issue? Or can I ignore the dip and go on my merry way? I see from receipts that the prior owner had found a grounding issue with the 3rd party Alpine radio. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

When you say you replaced the cable, do you mean the starter/alternator cable? Part no 996-607-019-01? When everything is new, the voltmeter should read ~14 and drop to 13.5v when all the fans turn on. If you replaced that cable, then I have some other DIY tricks to see if you have a ground issue.

Yes that cable was recently replaced as well though not at the same time as the other parts. The prior owner was definitely looking into this problem.

POST 4Original post

OK, well the symptoms sounds like that cable, but let's try some more diagnostics. Do you have a hand held voltmeter and either a set of jumper cables, or 12' of single strand electrical wire?

yes

POST 6Original post

I will send instructions later today. I am traveling this morning.

POST 7Original post

Please post what you find. I have had the same issue and having been chasing it with no luck

POST 8Original post

So now we are going to diagnose if there is a problem with the negative or positive side of the connections. Bring back the car when it is warm. Open the frunk and remove the battery cover. Place a handheld voltage meter on the battery. Take your 12' wire or battery jumper cables llinked together and connect one to the negative battery post and the other to the main bolt that holds the air cleaner box in place. This is the standard place to jump from. If the is no change in the voltmeter, your ground line is fine. If not, you need to check all the ground to chassis connectors. If this isn't the issue, remove both clips and connect one side to the plus side of the battery and the other side to the jump start post behind the plastic housing to the right of the steering power fill. If the voltage doesn't change, then the starter alternator cable is bad. Let me know,
