Is it a smell of fuel, the turbos run extremely rich on startup, one of the reasons that you should not let it idle when cold which could lead to bore washing and if you use a hight grade fuel the fuel will smell quite a lot in an enclosed space.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recently I've noticed that the car is extremely stinky with fumes whenever I start it from cold. It is really quite bad - you don't want to be standing near it for the first 10 seconds after it starts, it's that bad to breathe. Any ideas on why this would be? It didn't always used to be like this.

POST 2Original post

I suspect that your cats have failed. If you get your head down next to the rear wheels, you might hear some strange rattling.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It has 100 cell sports cats as part of the europipe. Hmm, maybe that's when it started behaving this way? Feels like it was more recent though.

POST 4Original post

cats don't last forever; you might try what they used to call an Italian tune up, but in this case, the idea is to get the cats nice and hot to activate them and burn off any residues - not always easy in the winter, I know

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I'll have a listen for any rattles and try to give it a thrash...

POST 6Original post

POST 8Original post

if it's a dead cat, it'll smell of rotten eggs... it's not a great smell, unlike Castrol and 98

POST 9Original post

@Robbidoo have you checked for codes or the fuel trims?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just smells of fuel, partially burnt at a guess. Extremely unpleasant to breathe in. Definitely nothing like anything eggy.

It's exactly how you describe but it hasn't done this forever, only in the last few months. I'm just wondering what might have changed. It lives outside so no worries about enclosed spaces.

POST 12Original post

Leaking fuel rails due rust? Does it also smell when you park up after a drive? My C2 just had this problem, unsure if a Turbo would have this issue as a different design. Edit: This would strongly smell of fuel not burnt fuel.

POST 13Original post

If it's not burnt eggs, but unburnt fuel, it might be running rich on a cold wintry start. Is there a lot of black crap coming out of the exhaust? You could try parking in a warm garage overnight and trying a cold start .... diagnosis over the internet is never straightforward.

I suspect that the cold spell is to blame with the cold start enriching the fuel mixture to compensate for the temperature drop

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay thanks guys. Sounds like all is well and i just need to hold my breath for a bit. Car runs well, no knocks from the exhuast etc, so I'll just keep an eye on it. Appreciate the replies.
