I don’t think I’m quite at the stage of pulling it all back off again, certainly not until I’ve rebushed the rear subframe and replaced the gearbox mounts, which is next on the todo list.

Suggestion

- Adjustable aftermarket parts are often the same price or cheaper than OEM and give you the ability to run more aggressive camber which supposedly greatly improves handling.

Like I say you just have to drive to its characteristics and especially in corner exit use the weight to grip and drive out of a turn.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Outcome without a verified action link

It worked as a nice compromise between ride and handling on the poorly surfaced A and B roads, and was comfortable enough that we didn’t complain about the ride quality.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thinking ahead to later this year I'm planning to refurb the suspension. My previous C4 I replaced all the arms and it had eibach springs on oe dampers. The ride quality was decent and the road holding was really planted. I want to maybe be 10mm lower (just for aesthetics really). My options are KWV1 or V3 which I like the idea that the INOX stuff seems to hold up to British weather well, Bilstein PSS10 or the kit from Centre Gravity that they do, although I'm not sure if they sell this for install other than by themselves. I don't track the car just fast road use and some long distance work. Wonder who may have experience of any of the options and any opinions?!

POST 2Original post

I’m not particularly happy with the CG kit, feels like the spring rate isn’t balanced front/rear. It’s handling ok, but not amazing, the ride quality was ok for the 6hrs on the motorway today. I was very disappointed when I first installed it, especially after getting messed around for months, but it has got a bit better once it’s bedded in. Maybe 911s are just fundamentally flawed in handling due to the engine location? Toying with trying the koni special active, but not sure what springs to use with it.

POST 3Original post

Can you ellaborate on getting messed around? I don't think there is general agreement that the 996 has flawed handling... it won Evo car of the year and many other plaudits at the time.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’ve found the handling on 996’s generally pretty good. Different driving experience and style due to the engine over the rear but drive to that strength and they’re great. My issue is that the previous owner installed new front shocks and springs and the rears are Christ knows how old so it has a nervous feeling pushing on certain roads. The c4 I had was pretty solid in corners really. Like I say you just have to drive to its characteristics and especially in corner exit use the weight to grip and drive out of a turn. Replacement arms are not a difficult job and smarten the ride up. There’s a lot of component parts and a lot of failure points. I’m just not sure where’s best to put my money on coilovers or if at all and maybe new shocks and h and r springs. Interesting that the CG stuff wasn’t all that

POST 5Original post

A very timely post - I'm in the middle of refreshing the suspesion on my 996T. A couple of points: - Adjustable aftermarket parts are often the same price or cheaper than OEM and give you the ability to run more aggressive camber which supposedly greatly improves handling. - 997 Turbo front top mounts are compatible with the 996T and are considerably cheaper (like 1/3 the price). - Don't forget that at the rear every single suspension arm is connected to the sub frame, which is mounted on rubber bushes. Seems pretty pointless to refresh all the suspension arms etc and not do the sub frame bushes.

POST 6Original post

Also, Spyder Performance currently have GT3 adjustable arms on sale at the moment - these are an absolute bargain at £175 (discount applied in cart) and allow more camber on both front and rear, with compensating castor adjustment (in the castor arm bush) Porsche GT2 / GT3 Motorsport LEFT Adjustable Control Arm With Full Shim Kit - 99634112190 Porsche Car Parts - Spyder Performance Porsche GT2 / GT3 Motorsport LEFT Adjustable Control Arm With Full Shim Kit - 99634112190 - Spyder Performance www.spyderperformance.com These are compatable with all 996s and 997s, front and rear, but are handed, there is a right hand version and a left hand one. If you're ever thinking about refreshing your suspension, I'd get these now at 50% off!

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 2690376

Apparently 997 mounts fit, but don’t allow you to run as much camber? Maybe not an issue if you have gt3 arms?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I’ll do the subframe bushes. I did elephant racing ones I think they were? on the c4 as they are designed for lowered vehicles. I’m not sure if that sash clamp is the approved Porsche bush removal tool!?!

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 2690385

I purchased a pair of subframes with the bushes already done, so I will have a spare pair of subframes from my car when my ones come off, if you would like to buy them of me and do the bush replacement whilst keeping your car mobile?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 2690355

After a lot of driving around the Lake District and a bunch of time on the m6 this week, I’ve decided I was being unfair to the CG kit. It worked as a nice compromise between ride and handling on the poorly surfaced A and B roads, and was comfortable enough that we didn’t complain about the ride quality. I still feel the front/rear spring rate isn’t quite right, it porpoises on motorways, but the handling has got better as it’s bedded in. I’m still not sure I’d buy it again, as day to day I’d prefer something a little stiffer/more fast road, would probably go Koni/H&R or Mo30, but I’m not about to pull it all back off again like I was 3 months ago. After reading the posts here, I think rebushing the rear subframe is next on my list.

POST 11Original post

It's only springs and dampers you'd need to swap, so not that big a job with new bolts on there?

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 2690878

Quite an expensive process to trial and error, unless you happen to have a shed full of coil over springs and a geometry ramp. Hence tempting to go for something known like h&r/koni, but that’s another couple of k in springs dampers. Actually changing them is pretty easy, although the front is a bit of a faff because you have to take the whole lot off to separate the damper from the hub carrier.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 2690879

For sure, but your CG dampers still have a lot of value if barely used and I'm sure would sell pretty easily. Lots of people want comfortable road set ups.

POST 14Original post

Not sure the Koni/H&R combo would offer you what you want anyway to be honest? Are you sure it is not the geo? I know everyone asks for a fast road set up, but is that what people really want? One thing you could try, is to mark exactly where your front top mounts are now, and bring them right out, you will then have only a smidge of negative camber on the front. See how that make it feel? Far less tramlining, the steering wheel won't feel as fidgety, the whole car seems to feel a lot more settled without getting to the point where you are inducing understeer. A few people have driven mine and have been blown away by how it feels and can't believe it when I tell them the settings. It could be worth trying that quickly, can do it in 5 mins, try it and then get it back to how it was in 5 mins too.

POST 15Original post

I don’t think I’m quite at the stage of pulling it all back off again, certainly not until I’ve rebushed the rear subframe and replaced the gearbox mounts, which is next on the todo list. It’s definitely grown on me as it’s bedded in and the ride quality is decent on poorly surfaced A roads. At this point the handling is probably sortable with geo
