I'm researching a right rear axle replacement on my
2012 Cayman S
Black Edition. Does anyone have a favorite ball joint splitter for use with these cars. I've done suspensions, water pumps, timing gears/ belts, exhausts etc , but never split a ball joint and at 70 years old can't wait to get this added to my qual card.
I used the one from
Harbor Freight
successfully. Pretty inexpensive and did the job.
If you want to remove the axels, you do not need a ball joint tool.
I have a 987
Boxster
.
Loosen axel nuts while car is on the ground.
Raise car off of the ground and remove cv joint bolts.
After axel is lose you will find there is not enough room to slide it out.
Put a jack under the end of the lower control arm near the hub and raise it slowly.
You will get it to an angle that you can get the axel to slide out.
Be careful that you do not raise the car so high to lift it off the jacking
points
.
Be sure you have your socket bits securely into the cv joint bolts, so you don't strip them.
It worked for me.

Don't forget that for tools like these (that see very rare usage), you can often rent them at your FLAPS for free.
Darn Bernie! Thanks and I appreciate the suggestion. I'll will give it a shot when I can get the garage temp a little more habitable. The axle is leaking grease from the brass cap/ ring on the wheel carrier side of the shaft.

Did all four corners.
I used the HF unit on my Elise. I had one joint on the left that was giving me a hard time, so I changed clothes and went to HF and bought the tool for pocket change. Came home and went directly into the shop and inserted the tool. (of course I had the nut on loose!) I cranked on that thing and it would not release. I figured I was going to have to get more serious, and worried about getting grease on my clothes. I went down the basement and grabbed the garage clothes I'd had on before. Got back out to the shop and discovered the taper had popped loose in my absence.
