Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Several months ago I noticed that after about 10-15 minutes of driving the cooling fans started running. The temperature gauge does not go over the normal operating temp, nor does the over heating light turn on. I have installed a new water pump and thermostat. What else should I check and replace?

POST 2Original post

Could be normal. That's what they're supposed to do. However after any work on the cooing system there's a chance that there's trapped air pockets Check your coolant level. I'd do it at the expansion tank in the engine compartment. With a cold engine, open the cap and fill it, then leave the cap off and start the engine. Turn the cabin heater temp to max. Watch the coolant level and top it up as necessary. After the engine starts warming, replace the cap.

POST 3Original post

The temperature gauge, unfortunately, is a lie. It won't show overheating until things are really hot. If you attach a probe to the electronics, you'll see the coolant temperatures go up and down as you expect (i.e.: up when climbing a long hill, up when sitting at a traffic light idling, etc). I suspect that Porsche corporate decided some owners complained and were worried about fluctuations, so they did what other manufacturers had: make the gauge just read a steady, incorrect value. Now Porsche temperatures are "rock solid" just like the other manufacturers' lying cars!
