The old bearings were a bit of a state when I got to them, but I was probably a bit rough disassembling everything!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Morning, I have the rear wheel carrier/subframe off the car and the bearings spin ok. The car has done 125k and service history doesn’t mention when/if they have been replaced. I’m going to do some preventative maintenance and replace them. I’m assuming the car being 26yrs old the sealed bearing grease will be dry. What bearings have other people used? I’m thinking of using SNR from Spyder Perfomance. Thanks, Antony.

POST 2Original post

I changed my fronts in January last year at 170k miles. They didn't need changing but I had the carriers off at the time whilst fitting new springs and shocks. Don't know what the rears will be like to do but the fronts were a nightmare. Every bolt that holds the cover plate on was seized in ther carrier and snapped. I had to machine them all out and re-tap them. The original bearings were in pretty decent shape for the age with no evidence of any play. I replaced them with FAG bearings: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335787673581

POST 3Original post

I had exactly the same when I replaced my front bearings - six out of eight bearing cover bolts snapped and had to be machined out. I can't imagine the rear will be any easier. I used SNR bearings from Design 911. They seem ok. The old bearings were a bit of a state when I got to them, but I was probably a bit rough disassembling everything!

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the responses. Ive had a few snapped bolt already, ill look forward to removing the bearing cover!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I managed to extract the bearing successfully and I lucked out and didn’t snap any of the retaining bolts. The bearing had a lot of play, so I’m glad I caught it while taking the wheel carriers off. The drive flanges were difficult to remove.

POST 6Original post

The bearing won't have had a lot of play. They come away from their seated position once you undo the big nut clamping them in. Only way you can check if there's any play is by rocking the wheel when the centre nut is fully torqued.

That makes sense, thanks Alex

POST 8Original post

There was someone on FB yesterday that pressed the flange in to the bearing (after the new bearing was pressed into the hub) without supporting the inner race..didn't go well. I always freeze the flange prior to this and do it really slowly making sure it goes in perfectly straight.

I commented on that thread - I made a similar mistake when I did mine, had my rear race support in the wrong place and destroyed my new bearing.
