Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I dont know anything about working on cars but the point of the 996 was to learn. And am using the Bentley and 101 projects books and YouTube. I have a 99 w 80k miles. The other day there was a squeak squeal and then a whooshing pop. I looked under and see this. I have removed the water pump and thermostat and will replace with new parts. I have a low temp thermostat. my question, short of just replacing all this is there some way to trouble shoot what actually happened? Nothing looks obviously broken to me & the hoses are supple and flexible. Can I tell if it was the thermostat or hose, etc? thanks

POST 2Original post

It's not the thermostat, or the hose. It's the water pump internal seal that failed, allowing water to leak into the bearing which subsequently failed, which caused the squealing noise. A 996 water pump gets replaced every 60,000 miles and if not done, this is what happens. You should replace the water pump, and the thermostat with new gaskets. The hoses probably would last until 100,000 miles. Troubleshooting: while the engine is all assembled, you apply pressure to the coolant system and see what leaks. It's obvious in this case. The other thing you can do is to spin the water pump by hand. Any noise, wobble, looseness at all, means it's gone.

POST 3Original post

Congrats on the new hobby! Couple of things to know while working on this. Your coolant should be pink, not green (although there may be an acceptable green coolant). To refill this, there may be a poor mans way to do it, but the quickest and most efficient way to refill is with a vacuum tool. You will need an air compressor and a tool to draw a vacuum from the the expansion tank filler cap. The tool is routinely on sale at Pelican and you can get a cheap one on Amazon for even less. There are 16 coolant hoses around the engine and they all need to be replaced in my 21 year old car. I decided to wait and had one of them blow catastrophically on my way home from the track. Mine is a cabriolet and I was alerted to the failure when I slowed at a stop sign and giant cloud of steam blew forward over me. It was either the 996 106 851 03 or the 996 106 850 06 and my indy replaced both. Oh, the fun we can have with these!
