As a useful bit of information that I now know for certainty, on at least 996.2 cars - the airbag ECUs can be swapped between cars and do not need to be coded.

Suggestion · Original poster

Replacing the Airbag ECU removed that code, but brought up others, namely for seat belt tensioners (only present on facelifted 996.2 onwards cars), and both airbag sensors, which I'm assuming were fried at the same time as the airbag ECU and a communication error between the immobiliser ECU and the airbag ECU, which I'm hoping is a corrosion issue.

It has been sat for about 6 weeks without much driving though, so I suspect the battery may be low.

We've tried using other airbag ECUs from breakers yards, but they come up with different faults, so I'm guessing they need to be coded to the car?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

Outcome without a verified action link

I'm thinking about putting together a thread on my airbag ECU research, because it's been a long journey with a lot of false leads along the way to getting this fixed.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My local independent and his contact in an OPC are stumped by an airbag fault with my 2002 996 Turbo Coupe Tip. The airbag light comes on with the ignition, can be cleared, but then comes back with the next ignition cycle. The reader is giving the code 67 "Only for Development" which neither my independent or the OPC tech have seen before and apparently isn't in the workshop manual. Has anyone come across this fault and/or code before? For background, the car hasn't had any swaps in seatbelts or seats recently, neither has it been in a crash during my ownership of 3 years. It has been sat for about 6 weeks without much driving though, so I suspect the battery may be low. We've tried using other airbag ECUs from breakers yards, but they come up with different faults, so I'm guessing they need to be coded to the car?

POST 2Original post

hi @youngsyr did you find out what this code was ? nothing I have seen before

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No, except that the Airbag ECU was fried after some sort of incident with the wiring... I'm hoping to get these all sorted over the next few weeks after trying all sorts of things to work out what was going on. As a useful bit of information that I now know for certainty, on at least 996.2 cars - the airbag ECUs can be swapped between cars and do not need to be coded. Indeed there is no option to code them even on the Porsche OEM software (PIWIS II). I'm thinking about putting together a thread on my airbag ECU research, because it's been a long journey with a lot of false leads along the way to getting this fixed.
