Porsche made multiple changes to the cooling system between 1998-2000, and some updates required replacement of other items to work (steel lines, reservoir tanks, etc.) When I changed this hose on my 10/98 C2 I also needed to replace the steel pipe that ran along the side of the engine and under the bellhousing to the opposite side.

And when I do a porsche parts check now, the -55 supersedes to the 850.05.

You could replace the AOS hose with a longer generic hose (if you can reach the far end with the engine installed) or splice in a hose barb with a short piece of hose to jump the gap (which looks bad but would work).

But I got it back together by replacing both the hose assembly and the rigid pipe.

I don't think you will have any luck finding the old P/N hose anywhere, when I did my early '98 build update I needed to change the metal pipe as well.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I haven't gotten back to that project, so that new hose is still not installed to confirm, but what you show in your picture is what I expected the problem to be.
Just bought some replacement coolant hoses for an '00 C4.
996.106.250.55 supersedes to 996.106.850.05. But the hoses have a different contour at the coolant tank connection. The new hose has an S bend and is longer.
Maybe made for a newer or different coolant tank?
The nipple for the AOS hose connection will be further away if using the new hose, and not sure the AOS hose will reach?
Is there another hose p/n that I should be trying to use?
Thanks,
It does look like you have the incorrect hose, is your C4 a coupe or cab? There are other options available. Can you see a P/N printed somewhere on your old hose? This might help. 996.106.250.54 looks more like old hose.
Might be best to either call your local P-car dealer or Pelican Parts to confirm with a VIN.
It's a C4 Coupe. The -55 hose came in the car. Yes, the -54 looks more like what I need.
According to an old PET version, the -51 & -53 supersede to the -54, and the -54 supersedes to the -55. And when I do a porsche parts check now, the -55 supersedes to the 850.05.
The -51, -53 and -55 are NLA. The -54 does still show up as available. So I'll check with the dealership where I got this part (who originally confirmed the 850.05 is the correct replacement by VIN...), about getting a -54.
I wanted to check here first, believing it more likely someone here would get me pointed in the right direction. Thanks for the quick reply.

Hopefully you can still source a hose that works for your cars current configuration.
Well, this is confusing. I tried to order 998.106.250.54 for my '99 C2 and they said it was superseded to 996.106.850.05 and that I also would need the steel pipe that gbarron mentions (part #996.106.243.54).
SoCal911t, if your 99 C2 was originally configured like mine you definitely want to upgrade to the new hose/pipe combo. Porsche made this change to move the rubber hose further away from the exhaust header. When I removed my old hose it was more than crispy from header heat, and not far away from blowing out leaving me stranded somewhere. See my post here:

With my application, the metal pipe isn't the issue with the new hose fitment. The bottom hose connections between the -55 and new -05 are the same. It's the top connection to the coolant reservoir that doesn't match. Is the bottom connection on my tank an obsolete version?
Email from the dealer stated that the -54 hose also supersedes to the same -05 part number. Checking on-line, various aftermarket vendors show -54 and -55 hoses are also NLA, or showing on back order.
I did notice that with your old hose...my guess is your car was built with partial updates and Porsche added more in later production. Did the C4 have a different expansion tank configuration than the C2? I do see one -54 hose listed on e-bay, probably one of the last ones floating around before production stopped:

Frisbee - any fitment/connection problems to the coolant tank with the extra bend in the top end of the hose? What about the AOS line connecting to the nipple, was it long enough to still reach?
I did this swap 9 years ago, so I don't remember any fitment details. But I got it back together by replacing both the hose assembly and the rigid pipe. It's been running for the past 9 years, so I guess it must have fit!
@Oddjob
Did you have any issues with the AOS line not reaching?
On my 99 C2, I just replaced the hard-line (
996.106.243.54) and the 3-way hose (
996.106.850.05), but that bend at the top of the hose puts it too far away from the AOS line. The 3-way hose originally installed was straight at the top.

You could replace the AOS hose with a longer generic hose (if you can reach the far end with the engine installed) or splice in a hose barb with a short piece of hose to jump the gap (which looks bad but would work).
That's my backup plan. But first, I will stop by the local Porsche dealership's parts department tomorrow morning to see if I can get the correct hose.
It's nearly impossible to find the correct part online because of the incorrect "superseded" part number.
/shrug
The local dealership parts department was no help.
After looking at the hose route a bit closer and the differences between the
99-00 vs 01+ coolant tank
, I'm leaning towards the 01+ coolant tank being the answer. The connection port for the hose in question is located slightly further back, which I believe accommodates the bend in the hose.
I'm going to order an '01+ tank from Pelican. I'll report back my findings.
Isn't there a 996.1 vs 996.2 expansion tank difference, some use the later tank for the easier availability and cost on the early cars?
Cant remember the details ,, just remember there being a caution about ordering the tank if you had a car close to the end of the 996.1 production.
So I have an early 1999 C2 Cab. I searched for the "old" tube by part number, but all I find is a link back to Rennlist forums. Were you able to find the old hose? Or are you having to use the new one with an extension? I'm going to replace my water pump soon (not tank) and was going to swap hoses while at it, but sounds like I would have bought the wrong (newer) one.
I don't think you will have any luck finding the old P/N hose anywhere, when I did my early '98 build update I needed to change the metal pipe as well. That said, the 996 106 850 05 hose was the correct fit for my coolant expansion tank so I did not need to update that, just the metal pipe that runs under the rear of the engine.
