Suggestion

So using all new Porsche 3.8RSR parts this Mamerow / Porsche was built by Mamerow Engineering using the Turbo wing that was available, it competed in '93 but crashed three quarters of the way through the season at Ahlhorn (where 6 out of 23 cars were DNF's), was parked up and was then re-built in 2012 by which time Porsche would of course supply the correct wing.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As the car arrived today I thought I would start a thread so here it is. It’s the arctic silver car recently advertised at DK Engineering, 2 owners, 26k miles and a full history. It is immaculate and flew through the usual meticulous inspection by Neil Bainbridge. A late 1996 car (MY97) supplied to Japan and then it went to California. I have the original seats and steering wheel in boxes but we fitted new sumptuously trimmed Recaro Pole Positions and a GT1 steering wheel. Otherwise the car is standard. You can hopefully see from the photos below how different arctic is from polar silver, which was a more common (if I can say that about a GT2) colour - my RS Clubsport is polar and it is clearly a more blue hue. The car is epic to drive - I was expecting old school massive turbo lag but it feels pretty linear. And it feels as fast as a modern GT3 or RS so it must have been a beast back in the mid 90’s. of course, you don’t have RWS and the other chassis trickery of a modern 911 and you are very aware of the weight in the rear out over the axle. Something with depth and a joy to learn.

AndrewD said: Beautiful. Of the various things that kicked me up the arse to get back into sports cars and, specifically 911s, was arriving at my local bike shop who were having an open day and one of these being parked out front. I knew exactly what it was, straight away. The exposed screw heads on the arch extensions just look brutal - functional and non nonsense - and sort of make a statement about the overall car; performance first. These things still look outlandish today.

I was taken out for a spin years ago in an orange one, scared me silly tbf! Absolute beast! TX.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great feedback, thank you! And like many of you, it’s the memory of seeing one of these beasts in the flesh back in the day, and watching them dominate so many races in my more formative years, that lit the fire. For years I wanted one. Came close recently to a race car but I really wanted a road legal one and then this car appeared. It is almost flawless and a great testimony to the care of its previous owners. Yesterday when it arrived I was just over the moon. Here are a few more photos as some of you asked - the new Recaro PP’s are very comfortable and I love the feel of the supple, new leather trim. The original “sports” seats are going to stay in the box, as will the huge chunky original steering wheel - the GT1 wheel feels so much better to use and just looks right. The other thing is how much more aggressively styled the GT2 is compared even to the RS Clubsport. Obviously the flared front and rear arches but even the crazy rear wing on the RS looks a little tame if that were possible, in comparison of course.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And the alarm fob reminds you the car is from the mid 1990’s as it looks like a tiny model of an ancient mobile phone

Awesome. I think I know who X might be. Surname begins with M? He was working at Porsche Silverstone back in 2003 when I walked in and bought my first 911 from “M”, a lovely 996 GT3 they had in the showroom, by coincidence also arctic silver. You could actually buy cars with almost delivery miles back then as no doubt you can recall!

POST 22Original post

Definitely a different X! I was into TVRs from mid 90's to 2009. That's why I got to see a lot of the GT races, as the Tuscan Challenge races were on the same billing and, in later years, TVR themselves were in the GT Championships. Always loved the Blue Coral team cars though. I seem to remember the flatnose 935 cars being incredibly loud.

He looked like a librarian and then you got talking about his racing not only 911 GT2 but also GT1...! I was into TVRs also - first was a 1993 Chimaera 4.3 then Griff 500 and 4.5 Cerbera. Griff was easily the best of those, did 38000 miles from new in 2 1/2 years.

And it feels as fast as a modern GT3 or RS so it must have been a beast back in the mid 90’s. of course, you don’t have RWS and the other chassis trickery of a modern 911 and you are very aware of the weight in the rear out over the axle. Something with depth and a joy to learn. Congratulations! Do you know when it was exported from Japan to the US? I have a photo of a silver (with gold alloys) 911 GT2 I took outside a Porsche specialist in Tokyo in 2009...

The two things I can think of are: - Japan GT2 is LHD - The Japanese car also has option code 912 “ohne typschild” so there isn’t an option code sticker on the inside of the bonnet Also has 92l fuel tank (option code 545) - not sure if C16 got this.

So if it doesn’t hit reserve and sell you don’t pay CC anything (or just a small admin fee)? Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose, has the market softened or would you get back what you paid via SOR with one of the big boys like DK or THJ?

Yep, as a seller no fee whether it sells or not. I don’t need to sell the car, have my eye on something expensive but not a must-have, and it was worth testing where CC could get it as they seem to be on a roll.

My local bike shop, in the next village, had a post-refurb open day about ten years back. One of the customers turned up in a silver 993 GT2. I don’t think anyone else knew what it was - probably most thought it was a badly botched-up, old Porsche. I knew, went to talk with the owner about it. He’d had the car a while and was obviously very attached to it. Didn’t ask prices, but I do recall that by then these cars were climbing through £200k mark.

I've only experienced a normally aspirated Ninemeister 993 with circa 330bhp. Best 911 I've ever driven. These GT2 are unicorns but I have to be honest if you can't pedal do not bother. You'll swap ends at three fig speeds no probs at all. Little above my ability. I see the 964 3.8 RS at hairpin sold. £1.3m ask. GT2 are worth more imo to me anyway.

The 964 3.8RS at Hairpin was one of only two RHD 3.8RS ... a car ordered by Jack Tordoff of JCT600. The remaining 54 cars were all LHD ... and the 45 RSR's were all LHD ( numbers now checked !). A GT2 is good, but not in the same league IMHO. But if a car is worth more to you than a prospective purchaser and you don't have a use for the cash ... why would you sell it ? POST 79Original post

Yes. It doesn't have a Porsche vin number ... it is a Mamerow with a Mamerow vin number built with Porsche's blessing (although at the time they wouldn't supply the RSR rear wing (... too much competition ?)) Mamerow Engineering already owned a 964 Cup bought new from Porsche which Peter Mamerow competed in '91 and '92 but couldn't get a 3.8RSR. The Wagenpass was carried over and the car could be raced by Peter or Christian Mamerow (who was then an Audi works driver). Once finished, the sponsor decided that the car was far too nice to race ... there had been 45 road going 3.8 RS's ... so in 964RS N-GT style the car had a handbrake fitted and was road registered in Germany. As with many of these cars it found its way to the UK, and then to me. Having done 20,000 Km in my 964RS N-GT and done a bit of amateur racing, I think this could be a lot of fun ... P.S. You have mentioned the independent throttle bodies the fabulous sound of which was mentioned ... unrestricted the engine could run up to 350bhp but I would be planning a long life performance strategy !! Certainly Wayne is the person to make the most of it ... you are probably right on more than 350bhp, my 3.6 with Motec and a Wayne Schofield remap was giving 340bhp ... cat bypass, primary exhaust, secondary bypass and a Wills Tip bringing it in at just under 105db ... I just don't want to expect too much ...

Both incredible cars and nice examples. Values are what they are and due to relative numbers produced may not correct too far of at all? Interesting comparing values of Lhd to Rhd variants now that the US can import these cars, import tariff aside. Folklore says it had a not too bad head on at the crest of a hump back bridge when new. causing a crumpled front tub. Rather than repair and always have a repaired car, Peter Lovett had the factory prepare a complete GT2 shell for him and stripped the original and rebuilt on to the new. The car was still midnight blue, as per when first collected from the factory by Peter and his young son Edward. The next owner had the car resprayed black to match his other Porsches at his home in Jersey.
